The 500 S&W
« on: December 20, 2010, 09:54:05 PM »
I have been bitten by the bug that would be the baddest of the Handi Rifle Lineup bug the 500 S&W. Sell me on it guys. What makes this round great? I know everyone else has already asked and I have read a pile of posts on peoples reactions to the recoil of this setup but what are some of your honest assessments of this cartridge/combination. Your info would be much appreciated as i am in the market for a new toy and still up in the air as to what direction to take. But something about having a rifle in a 50. cal just seems appealing. It keeps coming to mind I know I want one but should it be my first Handi? I am so enthralled by it I think as I have enough rifles in my personal collection to honestly never have to worry about finding something to hunt with as I figure my 30-06, 30-30, 308, 25-06, 444 Marlin, 12 gauge slug gun, 22lr, 300 WSM, and 300 Ultra Mag should have all my general bases covered I am more interested in something uncommon or unique and considering A Handi Rifle is the only reasonable option for a 500 S&W it would seem the clear cut winner. Thanks for all your help guys it is truly appreciated.

Dan

I shot some Double Tap loads yesterday. Something about a 400gr hardcast at 1900 that will make you have "one of them" feelings.

Macho, manly, superman,no matter,DO NOT buy one if you cannot take the recoil. To me.....my hot loaded 45-70 Handi does not have the recoil of my 18" 500S&W Handi.

After the 12th shot from bench and bag yesterday,I started to develope a flinch. So.......time to quit. BTW,my 500 will cut one ragged hole at 25yds. And will almost do the same at 50. ----pruhdlr

You've got a lot of stuff that will do what the .500 will do...and more.  If I were you, and wanted a Handi, I'd get a .357 Maximum, or a .357 on a SB2 frame and ream it to Max.  I see you don't have anything in that caliber range.  My little maxi is my go to truck gun all the time.  Shooting .38s, .357s and Maxis it's hard to beat.  It'll fill the gap between your .22 and the big guys.

Sounds like you've already sold yourself on the 500.   Go for it!  But buy dies and lay in a supply of Starline brass and buy bullets in bulk, or start casting......
I told my pap and mam I was going to be a mountain man; acted like they was gut-shot. "Make your life go here, son. Here's where the people is. Them mountains is for Indians and wild men." "Mother Gue", I says "the Rocky Mountains is the marrow of the world," and by God, I was right. Keep your nose in the wind and your eye along the skyline

I is my only rifle that I shoot well with no scope. I use the "reduced cast" loads, it is pleasant to shoot, I can shoot it better than my 22 lr with no scope, the fiber optic sights are very visible, and even with this load it will go through a deer length wise like it wasn't there. Just serious cool factor.
