Personal best on Crows....
« on: December 21, 2010, 01:40:43 AM »
Me and my bud went out last Saturday to blast some of the Black Devils.  In two hours we had one dozen of them laying around dead.  Typical Crow/ owl fight decoy set up with crow decs in the trees.  I freaking love hunting these little buggers.........best kill number to date in one sitting.

It's all a hot mess...........

That's a good set for them.

One year long ago I went alone to the area three of us normally hunted them. Neither of them thought we'd do well as they felt it too early in the year yet. I killed 45 that day tho not all at one spot as I moved around and called from several spots. I believe I did take ten at one spot however.

The next weekend my cousin went with me but the third guy still refused to go saying it was too early and he just didn't believe I shot as many as I said. At the very first stop before it was even good daylight we had an even dozen crows and by 6:00 AM we had killed 20. We went on to kill 101 crows that day and stopped only because we ran out of shells and were tired anyway.

The third guy on our crow killing team went the next time and the three of us took 50. We had several more big days that year and wound up killing more that one year than we had any year before or since. It just seemed like all the conditions were right that spring.

That's awesome graybeard.  We have alot of crows in my neck of the woods.  Soon, I think I am going to spend a day hunting them and see what our numbers will be at the end.

Good job Swift, that is a good day of shooting. What load do you find best for them?
Size shot, amount, and choke? Ive done pretty good with 1 & 1 1/8 oz 7 1/2 s. I once shot one up in the jet stream with a Browning BT99 after trapshooting. It was dead at the shot and took a while and a distance to hit the ground. That was fun :D

A few years ago I drove down a road for about a mile and there had to be several hundred flying over me going to roost. A couple years ago several would fly across or very near my house on their way somewhere within 15 min every day. I would go out on the patio turn on the caller and here they come ;D I've been going to try to follow them to their roost and then they go out searching for food during the day and return to the roost in the eve. Once you find their flight pattern you have em.

Wasn't gonna admit this but I got a 410 barrel off a member the other day. Let the dogs out and heard crows. Grabbed the Fox Pro set it on my shooting bench on the patio and here they come. Well I had to try it, shot one 2 1/2" #6 at one and another came and I tried a 3" #4 . I think I may have shot behind them as the gun is new to me with a 22" barrel. Not the right follow through I'm thinking. Looked as though they were in range. I know 410 is not the right gauge for the task but I had to try it. Will grab the 12 gauge next time ;)

Graybeard, That's a whopper of a fish, I mean crow story ;D Sounds like a blast ;)

I have had pretty good success with any high brass #6.  But, I want to try some 7s or 7 1/2s.  I have heard that alot of the prople that really conentrate on crows like #7 shot.  I use a modified or a full choke.  Either of them have worked satisfactory for me.  I know some guys that like using the turkey chokes, but I find them to be way too tight of a pattern.

Shooting crows with a .410 would be one hec of a challenging shot,  :D

My other 410 with 3" #4s with knock a running squirrel out of the tree across most of the river. I use it as backup for the 22 when they spook or we miss. I will be checking the pattern on this new barrel. Just isn't much shot in the 410. Had to try it though ;D I think I just missed em :o I think I will get one if he's close enough and I get the pattern and shot size dialed in ;)

I usually have the modified in the 12.

I had one sneak in on me once and when I looked up he busted me and was gone. I think I moved just a bit to adjust the call. They are fun to shoot in the air or on the ground. They don't stand still very long ;D

Yeah that one year was like no other. Normally other than that one year the three of us or sometimes just two of us would manage from less than ten to around 20 or so a day with many miles driven and many stops to call.

It was a rare day to manage 30 other than that one season when it seemed the crows just wanted to be shot by us.

I used mostly an ounce and a quarter of #7-1/2 shot and my cousin used an ounce and an eighth of #8 shot. Dennis the third guy used various loads seldom the same trip to trip. Once I was using and ounce and a half of #6 and lucked one into the brain of a lone crow that was circling at what had to be 200 yards from me. Couldn't do that again in a million years. It was just his day to die.

I recall one day I was shooting two ounces of #6 from my Rem 11-87 and one came in circling me while I was in a young pine thicket. I think nearly every shot took off a limb or the top of a pine. I emptied the gun and never touched a feather. We sure got a laugh out of that one.

I killed one with my Ruger Single Six at about 50 yards.  I'm proud of that.

OUT OF THE AIR ;D

Either way I would say that was a good shot.

His feet must have been froze to the ground :D They seem to move just when I'm ready to squeeze the trigger.

Graybeard, I took my son goose hunting when he was pretty young. He shot at a goose that looked about 150+yds. Me and my buddy told him it was out of range as it fell dead. All we could find was one pellet through the head. Son had a big grin ;D ;D

:) Howdy! I've hunted crows a few times and the calls really work for a few times. Then, the crows get educated and only respond by sending a scout to see if it is a real owl and crow fight, etc. I used a 12g and #6 shot a few times. However, there are plenty of crows around so good hunting! Always, Gene

Those Crows can be canny for sure. Did you ever notice that they can tell if the human is with or without a long gun? Seems like I have seen it too many times to be a coincidence, even as a kid with or without an air rifle.

Swampman, you delt that Crow a card from the bottom of the deck when you threw down on it with that single six ;D
