Am I just cheap or is this an ideal?
« on: December 21, 2010, 01:43:02 AM »
Well last night I was eating and shelling some almonds when the ideal hit me I use walnut media so I wonder if almond media would clean brass in a tumbler? Put them in a food processer (when the wife is not home) to chop them up fine and use it just the same a walnut media. Any thoughts about this?

I'm thinking it won't work as well as walnut media but please try it and let us know.

Yes, you're cheap.

(when the wife is not home)

In my experience, when you have to use that disclaimer, you've got about a 50 / 50 chance.  I think it's a good idea, why not.

Hey now, every once in a while I throw some long strips of paper towels in my tumbler to suck up some of that filth.  It's cheap, and it kinda works.

Try used Dryer sheets, 2 halves are better than a full sheet,,works GREAT!

rescue_171,
They/we use walnut because it's abrasive, I'm actually useing walnut media I got from work, they use it in a sandblaster to polish steel. If Almond had merit as a polishing media they'd already know and be useing the stuff. I think they do use it as mulch and plant bedding,  :-[  It's too soft for polishing.

I resemble that only takes about 2 days during summer to dry 5lbs make sure you spread it out ;D

Try the almonds then if you need to buy your wife a new processor do it for CHRISTmas.

You won't be 'cheep' long if you try it.

If you wanna be cheap just buy the stuff that's ready to use at the pet shops and seed/feed stores.

Always wondered by dry builders sand wouldn't work.

I bought a 10 bag of crushed walnet shells on eBay.  Should be good to go for a long time.  Yes, it was cheap and it works.  Pet store walnut media works just as well and is much cheaper than gun-store medial.

Crush the shells with a hammer. I don't think you need a fine media, just small chunks. (I am cheap and I've tried everything from dried coffee grounds to cat litter; diotomatious earth and New Mews, a new litter that is hard and looks like rabbit feed. dried beans, peas, and rice, beach sand, and a bunch of other stuff I've forgotten. some work, some don't, and most aren't worth the trouble.). I can't imagine that dried beans, peas or rice would be any cheaper than corn cob media...

it would no doubt work but my time is worth more then the cost of a bag of walnut or corn cob at the feed mill. I too chuckle at guys washing it. It probably cost more to run a washer and dryer to clean it then it does to throw it away and put new in. Plus when your media gets old it is full of lead dust and i dont want that in my washer or even want to handle  bounce sheets covered in it. THat may be getting a bit picky as to be honest i could care less. Ive just got better things to do then clean or produce something as cheap as tumbling media.

Try a commercial meat grinder to chop em, or put them in a good qaulty bad and smash them with a hammer.

At a gun show once a guy has 5-6 different types media not sure about almonds . Got to ask , do ya'll have better luck with shell , walnut or other over corn cob ? I have always had cleaner cases with cob. Whats the trick ?
