My biggest ML buck with some disappointment
« on: December 21, 2010, 01:38:49 PM »
Saturday afternoon I was sitting on the edge of a hedge row watching a bottle neck that comes out to an uncut corn field. It was almost time to call it a day when out steps a buck. I was twisted around to my right about as far as I could go. He took one more step and I fired. He went down on his chest and pushed himself into the corn field, I didn't here anything as I was reloading and for a few minutes after. then I heard some crashing in the corn field and out he came. He dropped again just on the other side of a small brook. I fired again just as he started to move again, and I saw him lay down in the field on the other side of the brook. It was getting late at this point so I called my son to come up with a good flash light. This would give the deer time to expire if he hadn.t already.
About 20 minutes later my son showed up and we started tracking the deer. My son saw him first and said to me "dad are you sure you shot a buck this one doesn't have any antlers" I told him I was sure it was a buck and that he must have knocked them off. My son retraced the deers steps and found both antlers.
I noticed as I was cleaning him that there appeared to be a wound on his hind quarter that looked like it had been there.
I got the call from my processor that the deer was full of infection so none of the meat was usable.
I went a bought one the European mount kits. Here is my biggest ML buck

I'm in 7R And my Buddie took a bruiser of an 8 point during shot gun. My son took a broken tine 5 point on Thanksgiving, and I took a doe the Sunday after thanksgiving so we have meat in the freezer. I just get irritated at guys who take running shot at the deers butt.
Given the amount of infection he probably wouldn't have made it through the winter, so at least I ended his suffering.

My brother got a buck this year and even though we could not find any past injury the officer claimes it to be gangreen. The meat looked good but stunk bad like it had been hanging in warm weather for a week, when it had accually been cool 1st week of nov. weather here in the northern zone. Dec had to take the entire deer in order to get a replacement tag and since it was'nt nothing big he got it all. When we asked him what they do with them thinking they would do test on them to be sure of what it was, he said they throw them wherever dot takes the roadkill. Now that just dont make sense to me.
