Merely in the interest of accuracy it would be "Fort McHenry" located in Baltimore Md. where Francis Scott Key penned the "Star Spangled Banner"

Almost all public school money is funded by state and local taxes.  Federal $$ is allocated for school lunch/breakfast and special education.  Other federal money would come to schools in the form of grants.  School textbooks would be paid for by state and local money.  To the best of my knowledge, approval for textbooks is given by the state board of education and local school districts.

Again I ask, what federal law denies Southern schools from publishing history books?

"Your thoughts on "Yankees" "

You need to understand there are northeners and southerners and that's cool.   Northerners fit fine in southern culture and make friends here as well as anywhere else.  But, then there are yankees; NO ONE likes yankees, even northerners...he77, they don't even like each other!  Yankees are pushy loud mouths, frequently profane, arrogant, discourteous to everyone they see - young or old.  Yankees should all go back up north to Florida where they came from and leave the rest of us, north and south, to live in peace.
Common sense is an uncommon virtue

I don't think you can understand the current attitudes in the deep south toward Yankees, unless you you were born & raised in the south in the 40s, 50s, & 60s. I know when the wealthy Yankees bought up the prime real estate and posted it to us southern folks that had always hunted & fished there it caused tremendous I'll will. Before the 60s in Florida there was no fence laws. We roamed at will
Yankees are not satisfied to just become a part of the south. They feel compelled to change the laws & value system to reflect the northern states they left. They are still trying to control southern values and manners. There are some things that to a southern gentelman are very important, like truth, protecting our womenfolk, maintaining our honor. Yankees say & do things that compromise these values and it's offensive to us. If a Yankee even suggests that I'm lying it is fighting words but they don't even seem to understand how we react to those statements. They just don't get it.  ???

I suggest the phrase " we don't give a da__ how you do it up north " sums up the problem. Yankees think they know better and we don't.

I tell you my 4 definitions of a yankee (my daughter married one, well he was born in SC but raised in WI.) anyway i told him when he asked me if he could marry her,  a good yankee visits, a dam yankee lives here, a hod-dam yankee marries from here & a dead yankee takes her north. Just like most yankees i work around he is a self serving jerk but a good provider & allows her to be stay at home mom. Very few do i consider to be northerners (decent) and even fewer i consider copperheads (Southern friendly) those that accept South & dont care to change it or its culture, language etc.
I am a Southerner, if i were born in the north, east or west id be just another human being!

Nope, federal forces fired on civilians in FL.  I think it was about 10 Jan, 1861.

If you are thinking of Sumter, Lincoln had refused to pull the federal troops off SC soil, and was sending provisions and reinforcements to stage there before invading deeper into the south.  I guess you would say that a home owner who shoots a burglar is the aggressor too.

Do what?

Is this a forum for learning - or smart allecky comments?

I believe I asked a question, based on limited knowledge.  I made no assumptions, assertions or accusations.  So to address your rude comment, no - I would not call a home owner who defends his home an aggressor.

It's comments like that one that cause an interesting thread to fall to pieces.  Think before you make comments like that.  You don't know me from Adam, you have no idea what an avid supporter of the Castle Doctrine I am, and how I read with dismay just yesterday in American Hunter that the PA governor just shot that bill down by veto recently - rending the entire population of PA open for being gutted in courts for defending their homes.

Back on subject , The people of both north and South have their own lifestyles , beliefs, honor system etc. Southerners seem to like to go it alone be the master of their own ship. The north seems to be more group oriented the union concept is an example. Forget the war of northern aggression look at today. Many in the South feel the north should not intrude into the South trying to bring unions etc. The north has created a situation where profit is almost impossible to achieve. Many northern jobs are going South or off shore. The South has some of this but the lack of unions allows for quick changes to counter it. I think saying in the South we don't look at an employer as a adversary is key to our way. Why should I go on strike and lose income because of some conflict I don't care about. Its not the north is wrong its the South likes their way better. It attitude ,

The question is born from the thought that there is a great deal of differences in the cultures.
The cultures are not marked by the inability to look at a set of facts and determine the truth.
There are some cultures who seem to hold to a position wheather or not there is substantial evidence truth---those are not Yankees or Rebels, as a culture.
Many in the south saw the futility and incorrectness of the late furor. They were chastised as traitors.
How could they be traitors at this point when 24 hours earlier they were Americans.
There is a lot that does not add up in this conflict---but to still hold to this is a little, well, unrealistic.
We can argue about that day but it is gone---why tr and put labels on people today?

I'm a Yankee who lived in the South for 14 years.  When I was in my early 20s, I had a good friend and neighbor, an old man, who called me "Yankee Boy".  That didn't stop him from giving me total permission to hunt and fish his land, ride his horses or just visit any time.  When my dog was ready to whelp her pups, he showed up with a brood box for her.  Occasionally, I'd come home and find a jug of "Shine" on the back porch.

I did have a run-in with the KKK.  A really good friend, a black guy I worked with and I were going to college together nights.  I came home one night to meet a half dozen of them on my lawn  They demanded to know why I was riding around with a nigger in the front seat of my car.  I told them it was my right to choose my friends, and I'd kill anyone who interferred.  I haven't a clue why it worked, but I was never bothered again.  It may have been the 12 ga. pump in my hands.

Today, I have many friends and relatives all the way from South Jersey (the Northern Most of the Southern States) thru Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida.  I don't know if it is recorded here on this forum, but Princeton New Jersey's university lost an equal number of men in the Union and Confederate armies. My wife is a Florida Cracker. As is my best friend and hunting buddy, Wayne.  Another Wayne, Florida cracker, a Navy Lt. and I hunted and fished together for four years....every chance we got.

I really miss the South, the friends there and the salt water.  However, I cherish my privacy and independence here on my 120 acres on da U.P.

+1 Pete.

I was not born in the confederate states or the yankee states. I have owned no slaves, nor will I own any. I will not try to tell anyone how to live or what to do. I will not accept an insult nor will I offer one.  Those I call friend are friends for life regardless of where they are from or thier skin color. I will stand with a friend until the end.

What I cannot abide is an able bodied man who won't work, insults women, a thief,a liar and a loud mouth.

Having said that gentleman you may cast your labels as you best see fit.

Now if you got something to say about my 45-70, get someone to hold your coat while we step out back. 8)
