new member to the club
« on: December 22, 2010, 01:00:11 PM »
well as of today I've joined the single shot H&R club.

went to Dicks today to grab some .410 shells for the boys and what do I find on the shelf but an H&R 22-250 for $240 I couldn't pass that up could I? they are on sale because of the new models coming in I guess.

I went with the 22-250over the .308's they had since I already have a Ruger in .308 and used it on this guy last saturday morning.

she was out at about 200yds and the .308 did a fine job on her but a neighbors son wants them to practice his taxidermy skills on and the .308 kinda made a mess of her on the off side. I only had 180gr rounds. so this was a good reason for a new rifle, or so I told the wife. plus I told her "LOOK AT HOW MUCH MONEY I SAVED US HONEY IT WAS ON SALE"

Welcome,

Just remember Handis are like Lays Potato chips, bet you can't have  just one!

Keep up the good work on the Yotes.  I may be guessing but is a 444M Handi in your future?

That's the best coyote I've seen in a while.......DEAD.  My Ruger M77 MKII .308 has been my most consitent coyote killer.  I could care less about a hole in the hide...the eagles, crows and ravens will never notice.  I don't know about the .22-250.  I'm still trying to figure mine out.  The .223 jumped right out of the box, and kerwhack, dead nuts on at 300 yards.  I can't hit the west wall of the barn from the inside with the .22-250.  The only thing it has ever killed is dirt.  That's after about 140 rounds through it.....I just don't like the rifle.

tinker toys hah that sounds right, that is what I like about them just like my 444 marlin with handloading I can have many rifles in one.

a 444 barrel is high on my list as well as a 20 gauge and .357 as well as a new stock set I think this camo plastic will be functional and I won't care if it gets dinged up but its not very pretty

as far as accuracy I had it nuts on at 100yds after only 6 shots with walmart winchester bulk ammo, thats all I had time for tonight before it got dark. so hopefully I got a good one.

does anyone reload for the 22-250? do I need a 2 or 3 die set it looks like the 3 die comes with a seperate bullet seating and crimping die. I have not loaded a lot of bottleneck cartridges, more a straightwall reloader.

my .308 certainly does the job on the yotes but I wanted a handi so the big hole in the hide was as good a reason as any I suppose.

Congrats on the new rifle. Congrats on the coyote also.

By the way only 3 additional barrels on your list? Now be honest ;)

More barrels, Huh?  I started that way, then got annoyed with all the barrel changing.  Then got a barrel that didn't lock up on my receiver.  Then another receiver.  Now got about 20 complete rifles.  It is a slippery slope, and this bunch of enablers/fellow addicts won't do anything to help.  Welcome to the dark side.

Welcome aboard 444!
Good job on the yote.
You know it's mandatory to give range reports when you get a new Handi! ;D

GOOD SHOOTING!

444,

I load the 22-250 with just 2 dies, FL size die & seating die.  I do not crimp the 22-250 for the Handi nor do I crimp any of my rounds for the single shot handis.  I don't load this caliber much as it is my wife's gun but she is happy with the accuracy.  As long as she gets minute of clay pidgeon @ 100 yards she is all smiles.

Pete,

Your probably holding your tongue wrong when you shoot your 22-250. ;D  Let Patty try a few rounds through it and see how it does. ::)  FWIW, my wifes 22-250 likes the lightest bullets, including the 36 grain Barnes VG, and seems to do better with starting powder loads instead of near maximum.

I don't know that the 22-250 will be much easier on the exit wound side...everything I have ever shot with mine has been pretty messed up.  Maybe if you use a bonded controlled expansion bullet in the 22-250 reloads it may help...
