Will onion bulbs survive in the winter?
« on: December 23, 2010, 11:48:59 AM »
Onions to plant were in short supply this year and I didn't get mine in the ground soon enough.  When I did buy some, they were so cheap I bought twice what I needed and planted half of them in November.  I live on the NC coast and some winters are very mild, but not this one.  None of the bulbs have sprouted - but they could just be dormant, waiting for warmer temps.

Do you think they will rot, or sprout this spring?  My soil is sandy and well drained.

I would bet they will pop up just fine next spring. Wouldn't happen where I live in Wyo though. A lot of biannual plants need to grow two years to make seed, Carrots and beets and I think onions. Where I live if I want beet seeds I have to grow the beets one year, then store the roots over winter and plant them next season to get seed. For this part of the world that means you have to dig them up and keep them from freezing. At lower latitudes you lucky folks can just leave them in the ground. Point is some places don't kill things left in the ground overwinter.

The onions have already sprouted about 2-3".  That answers the question.  They sprouted during the coldest weeks of the winter.

They will probably survive, but they will only make green onions.I have been buying all of my onion plants from Dixon farms in Texas for the last several years. They have a good variety of short, intermediate, and long day types. They are shipped prepaid and always arrive in good condition for planting.

Thats good news.  I ordered some a couple months ago from them.  Looking forward to getting them in the ground in a couple of months.

I grow onions in pots on the back porch year round.

Every year I seem to miss a few 'runts' and sure enough the next year they will sprout and I will eat them as green onions.  This is in the Missouri Ozarks region and we get at lest a few days each winter around  zero.  I'm thinking of planting some this year in containers good to hear they thrive there.
