Considering a 527
« on: December 23, 2010, 12:42:43 PM »

I've been admiring the CZ for some time, in particular the 527FS. I'm really fond of the Manlicher style stock. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with them compared to American. I was worried that the extra wood around the barrel might cause accuracy  problems.

I have a CZ 527FS in 22 Hornet. It is accurate and beautiful. I don't have
a centerfire American to compare it to. I know the Hornet is a small, low
yield load but I have never had any POI changes while shooting it. It gets
shot alot when friends show up. It is pleasant and fun to shoot, plus drop
dead gorgeous (to me anyway).

Thanks Moose, I think they're beautiful too but if they don't shoot well pretty doesn't count for much. Don't discount the Hornet. I know a lot of people that use them for deer and hog.

Don't know what caliber your considering but the 2 I have owned, 22hornet & 223 preferred light bullets. The hornet shot 45gr great but the 223 groups opened up with even 55 grain. It preferred the 45gr white box Winchester loads.

My 223 was a 1-14 twist I never checked the hornet but assume it was the same. If you want to shoot heavier bullets then there are better choices, but if you can be happy with the lighter bullets the 527s are wonderful guns.

Oh one other thing the mini masseur action is not very smooth when it's new. But lots of cycling helps it immensely.

I looked at the FS
like the way they look but bought an American in 223.
But mine has a wooden stock.
Last Febuary I was out in a storm in Az hunting Javilina and was able to take one with it as well as my buddy was able to take his with my rifle.
I was using Remington 50 grain bullets and they mushroomed perfectly breaking bone and we found one bullet just under the skin on the far side.
The Javilina was shot at a little under 200 yards.  I thought the little JHP from remington would have turned into shrapenel once it hit bone but was suprised at how well it acted.  just use a heavier constructed bullet in the under 55 grains.  i used a 50 as that is all I could find at the time that even looked like a hunting bullet.
I think it would make a great small - Medium big game rifle.  Javilina, Coues Deer, Southern swamp deer and wild hogs under 150 pounds.
I have seen a Deer in NC hit with a 22 Hornet that looked like it was zapped with lighting in how fast it went down.  Walley Johnson in Last of the Ivory hunters talks about his son's friend shooting a Cape Buffalo with a 22 hornet and dropping it on the run with a single shot.
My Dad's best friend used to hunt deer in upstate NY with a 222 Rem for years with great success.
I think there are better calibers for Deer and Pigs but that whole thing about opinions and body parts.
If 223 is legal for big game where you plan to hunt the Cz 527 FS would make a great light little rifle to put meat in the freezer.
