Sometimes it's better to use a stone instead of a file. It's easy to remove too much with a file.
You could try Midway or some other supply store for files and stones... check the gunsmithing section.

Just a question... are you planning on filing the latch shelf, pivot, breech face, ??
If we have some more info on what you are doing we can probably be more helpful.

Does the barrel close squarely to the breech with no gap? Is it closing properly but not latching? The barrel needs to close properly with no gap before you work on the shelf.

YUP, I agree complete and understandable information is right there. Use control F as instructed, then type in barrel fitting... GO SLOW and CHECK OFTEN!!

Good luck,

FWIW, removing metal from the wrong place wont make it better.
If a guy doesnt KNOW if it is the wrong place or not
he shouldnt be removing metal.
Please note that I am not saying this specifically to you, but in general to help keep the wailing and gnashing of teeth at a minimum.

It is really easy to cut it 3 times and still be too short.

All my Handis are on dedicated frames.  I always try to keep two or three extra SB2 frames around to find the one that fits the new barrel best.  I started this practice 3 or 4 years ago, and now I have none that need shimming or tinkering.  I took a little off the latch shelf on one, and that was it.  I had a .357 that was shimmed at the pivot.  I put it on a different frame and it is fine.  It put Richard, Atllaw, right out of work making shims.

If I can ever get to Jawja, I'll get together with him and practice.....just in case.....ya never know when you'll need a shim.
