Gov. Granholm signs Michigan moose hunting law

By The Associated Press. Found at Mlive.com

December 23, 2010

Gov. Jennifer Granholm has signed a bill that could allow moose hunting in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

The state says on its website that the measure was signed this week into law.

An advisory council is expected to conduct a study of the moose population and recommend the number of hunting licenses that should be sold. Such a license would cost $100.

The bill was approved last week by the state Legislature.

A group of scientists had attempted to derail the legislation by sending a letter to the Democrat Granholm to veto the bill. They argued that too little is known about the size of the moose herd and its long-term prospects for survival.

Wildlife managers believe roughly 500 moose wander Michigan's far north.

They went from 59 to 500 moose and "scientists" think they aren't doing well enough to hunt. With all the wolves up there they are no doubt doing very well.

another animal like the elk that a guy will have to wait 20 years to draw a tag. I wish the dnr would quite wasting money on animals like moose elk and wolves and even black bear and put it where it is needed. Our deer herd!

Yeah, they're gonna have a season on Jackalopes next year, 50,000 tags at 1000 each.  Michigan is near broke and scratching in all the corners for cash.  What they need to do is to trash a bunch of useless bureaus and the overpaid numbskulls that run them.  We have too many laws and rules made by agencies and idiots trying to keep the ball rolling.  If we're gonna get out of this, Lansing needs pruning.

Another big place to cut back is welfare.  I know a guy, now 40 years old that told me when he was 17 he was never going to work for a living.  He never has, he has a Bridge Card.....and it gets renewed and renewed and he is inteligent and physically fit.  Another unemployed guy I know has a Bridge Card with 500 surplus dollars on it.  He can buy pop on it and turn in the cans for the deposit, but he can't buy gas or toilet paper.  The entire system is mismanaged and stupid.

End of rant,

Pete

Petemi, what is a bridge card, and how do I get one with 500 dollars on it? Do they give them out to us who live in Wisconsin?

It's a welfare debit card.  You have to live in Michigan, be lazy and know how to work the system to get one.  I don't think you qualify.

I applied for a Michigan elk tag for 20 years and quit.  If they're going to do the same thing with moose, I'll just sit back and plink the next one that wanders through.  I own and live on 120 acres and manage it for wildlife, pay the taxes, etc.  I've been skunked two years in a row on deer after 19 very good years.  If Lansing and the insurance companies have their way, there will be nothing  left.  I've lived on the U.P. for over 20 years, on acreage, and have never seen a moose........yet there's supposed to be enough to hunt.......and, I'm only 10 miles south of Newberry, the Moose Capital of Michigan.

Let me get this straight ........

500 Moose is a huntable population, but 700 (plus who knows how many more) Wolves are an endangered species????

We also have a million or so doves, but we can't hunt them either.

Don't know about the rest of you, but I'm fed up with liberals trying to tell me what I can do!

I'm sure Al Gore and the UN will some how say this is another sign of global warming.

Ten years ago, the DNR was telling us there were 600 wolves on Da U.P.   Now, ten years later, we have 700.  It's just plain B.S.  We have a lot more wolves than moose, and that is where the tags should go.  Now, that's something I'd pay my four bucks to apply for.

I often wonder if there is anyone in Lansing who has half a brain!

If there were 600 of them 10 years ago and they have no natural predators and an unlimited food supply how is it they've only managed to increase their numbers by 100 animals???

I seriously doubt there's anybody down there who can count beyond 10 with their shoes on!

(Good citizens of Lansing don't take offense, I'm not referring to you!)
