Kel Tec customer service
« on: December 24, 2010, 03:12:07 PM »
A few months ago I bought a P-11.  I followed the "fluff and buff" recommended on the KTOG web site.  I scheduled some range time with our fire arms instructor so I could qualify with it to carry off duty.   Well, when we went "range hot" I loaded a magazine and released the slide.   The round did not chamber. Racked the slide back and same thing happen.  I cleared the weapon and tried to figure out what was happening.  I didn't notice anything unusual.   Changed ammo and magazine and it still would not chamber a round.   When I got home I disassembled the pistol and looked it over.  Still no clue.  I got my calibers out and measured the length of the chamber.  I measured the chamber of my Browning Hi-Power and the difference was the difference between the case length of a 9mm and a 380 Auto.  I contacted Kel Tec and the very nice lady I talked to said they would send a pre-paid mailer and they would replace the barrel.   Well, by the end of the week the new barrel arrived and I got to the range a couple of days later.  It worked perfect.  For the price, it is what it is.  It's not a competition target pistol but as a self defense weapon it definitely does what it was designed to do.   I started at 25 yds and while not a tight "pattern" I kept them all in the chest area.   At 15 yds the pattern started to be a group.   From 10 yds in rapid fire, I was keeping a 2-3 inch group in the center of the chest.   That will put a hurt on any BG.  With the modern defense loads in 9 mm this is definitely a viable option for a lot of folks.  It's nice to have a company to stand behind their products without a lot of questions about "What did you not do right" or "It's not our fault and that will be $25.00 inspection fee plus shipping.  Great job Kel Tec!

I, too, am pleased with Kel-Tec's customer service...

I bought the little P3AT (.380 ACP) when they first came out and had "stove-pipe" and feed problems right from the start.  I eventually called Kel-Tec and described my problems and they said, "Send it back ASAP", so I did.

When I got it back, the magazine was missing, so I called them again and told them that I had sent it in with the magazine, but it came back without the magazine which, for self-defense purposes, made it useless.

The girl tried to tell me that she was SURE she sent the magazine back to me with the gun, but I insisted that it arrived sans the magazine, so she finally gave in and sent me another new magazine.  I was a little "put-off" that she'd think I'd lie about it just to get a "free" magazine (something I'd never do since my personal integrity is worth a heck of a lot more than the cost of a magazine)... but she eventually did "right" by me even tho' she believed she sent the original magazine back to me when, in fact, they really did NOT send the magazine back with the gun!

When I received the P3AT's magazine, I took the pistol and 200 rounds of ammo out to my club's range and gave the little pistol a work-out with nary a "hiccup" outta the gun.  She worked perfectly and fed all 200 rounds exactly as advertised.

Eventually, I decided that the little .380 was a tad "light" on power and I really needed to have at least a full 9mm (actually, I prefer a .45 ACP with +P hollow-points, but they're too  heavy for me to comfortably carry), so I got a Kel-Tec P-11 as my regular "carry-gun" when I'm "out and about", but I still put the little P3AT in my pocket sometimes and leave the 9x19 at home when I'll be removing my coat at my destination which would expose the P-11 in it's holster on my belt or when I'm going to a family member's home and wouldn't want to walk around with the P-11 showing the whole time I'm there.

While the P-11 is a bit big for a "pocket pistol", it carries just fine in the snug Uncle Mike's holster on my belt and is not any more noticable to me (weight-wise) than the P3AT was when I carried it in my pant's pocket.

Of course, when I leave the P-11 at home and take the P3AT... I put my old, fully-loaded with +Ps, Parkerized Army 1911A1 Colt-made .45 ACP pistol between the seats in the car since I don't wanna be caught "under-gunned" by some nasty ol' goblin and/or his "friends".   ;)

I took my wife's P-11 apart after the first shooting.  I couldn't get it back together correctly.  Called Kel-Tec and they said send it back.  I sent it back (this was before FEDUP demanded it overnight, because they hire theives for employees).  They returned it reassembled, with a trigger shoe, smoothened trigger and the updated guide rod system.  The gun has always worked flawlessly.  It was operator error that caused a problem and Kel -Tec went above and beyond to keep me (& my wife) happy!

I love my SU-16C, bought the Tactical Forend to mount lights/hand grips.  Very disappointed in initial rounds fired! Called Kel-Tec and got M16 extractor parts PDQ.  Shot a Police Qual Course 2 times with no issue with GI Ammo, but after that with some ammo(Never cheap Russian crap) still had a FTE or FTF. Best ammo fired was WW Ranger 60gr Nosler LEO ammo-1MOA thru EOTEC @ 100yds for 20 rds! Friends have dealt with their Customer Service-100% satisfaction.

I've not had any problems with my P32 nor my PF-9 but I belong to a couple Kel Tec Forums and I've yet to hear a bad word about Kel Tec's service Dept. Firearms sent back for even minor problems almost always get the full treatment of any upgrades and a full tune up. Name me another company that goes to that extreme to back their firearms.

My only question is " what is going on that everyone seems to need customer service on their Kel-Tec?

Not everyone does. It's just that most people don't write about " not having problems" . Read enough reviews and you'll find more than a few people with complaints about any firearm you can name. However you seldom hear about their service departments getting rave reviews. I've had my P-32 and PF-9 for 2 years now. My son has had his P-32 for 3 years. Neither of us have had a single issue with any of the three and we shoot more than the average person. However, it's nice to know that should a problem arise I can rest assured of outstanding service from Kel Tec. :)

I know their site had been hacked recently so that might be the problem. No idea but you are the first I've ever heard of not getting prompt and great service.

Kel Tec is farrrrrrrr from the only firearms manufactuer to have issues.  The ever popular Ruger LCP, a blatant Kel Tec copy, has had many issues as has about any new firearm you can name. The differance with Kel Tec though is two fold. One, they were very quick to correct the problems and two, they took extremely good care of anyone who had to send a firearm back. Going far beyond what any other company would do. Most sent in with even the most minor of problems came back with full trigger jobs, a full fluff and buff, all upgraded parts installed, and in many cases even the slides upgraded to Parkerized or Hard Chrome. Name me another company that treats their customers that well. If you can, and I doubt it, I'm betting it will only be on firearms that cost conciderably more than what most of us can afford while most anyone can afford a Kel Tec. :)

I just called this morning to inquire on the status of a P-11 I sent in last week. I was advised they are having a 6-8 week turn around on repairs @ this time.

Just an update. Kel Tek still has not gotten to my P11. They did advise me they are hiring gunsmiths. Should have just ordered an ejector and installed it myself. This is my backup carry pistol but replaced it temproarily with a PF9. The Colt 1911 is alot to carry in summer clothing but a 45 in an IWB holter beats the crap out of a 9mm sitting in line @ customer service. Not happy with Kel Tek right now.

Well yesterday I recieved my pf-9  back from kel-tec, I took it apart well not really I used a slave pin and removed the small pin just above the grip frame to clean up and re-blue as it had a little rust, well as I was replacing the pin the slave pin fell out (my fault) and all hell broke loose inside the handgun well that pin is not to be removed I find out later, the gun was sent to saun in Customer service, and after a couple weeks it was returned with a new or refinished slide and several updates, I was vary pleased with their service dept. and quick turn around.  Jim

Called Kel Tek this morning and other than the turn around time I will give them a thumbs up for what they did for me. I am the original owner of my P11 and have carried it for a number of years. I cast/reload my own ammo so I shoot alot of rounds. I'm guessing the P11 has had over 4k rounds put thru it and that may be a conservative estimate. They replaced everything except for my grip. That's right, completely new chassis/barrel/slide, plus a trigger shoe and trigger job. No charge at all. It will be shipped by the end of the week. I guess now I will have to delete it from my records and start over. It will be as new, serial number and all. Thank you Kel Tek.

I p/u the P11 yesterday and was pleased when I pulled it from the box. Just as the repair work ordered stated they replaced EVERYTHING except for the slide. I mean everything, they even put new sights on my original slide. New chassis, barrel, and grip. They polished the ramp and tossed in a trigger shoe. With service like that I'm glad I buy American. How many other gun manufacturers have you heard of that will rebuild a 17yr old gun free.
