Coyote Bait Question

Hi All,

Not officially a Yote hunter yet will be in a month or so.  Have the urge now that a pack swarmed my buddy while he was deer hunting last weekend in SE Ohio.  I have been reading a bunch about how to pursue these critters and about the different baits, lights, calls, guns etc..  Question, I have been shooting possums around my wife's horse barn and tossing the bodies into a bag and freezing them.  Are possums acceptable bait for Yotes?  Please say yes or I will have to explain to my wife why there are a bunch of frozen critters in her barn freezer.

you might want to consider thawing them out and letting them develop an aroma before using. I have used a redfox stuffed toy with good results.

I have seen people run ads on Craigslist looking for freezer burnt meat for this purpose.

When I had alot of dog attacks, the chicken carcasses would go to the coyote bait. Fresh blood, they'd come the same night.

They never touched the chickens that died of natural causes, either, which I thought was strange.

Are possums acceptable bait for Yotes?

bikerbeans, You may have to jump over to the trapping forum to confirm this but IMO, an opossum is the very worst thing that you can catch in a trap as it then has to be pulled and boiled before ever catching the likes of a Fox or Coyote again.

The possum "just like a skunk" can travel the edges with impunity. There is no shortage of them and they would be an extremely easy catch for the likes of a predator. Did I say that there was no shortage of them?

I have a butcher thats lives around the corner from me. I go get a plastic tote full of scraps from him and set up a bait pile. I then put a treestand about 75 yards out from the pile. Then I wait 2-3 days before I check to see if they are hitting it. If they are I refresh the pile the next day and the day after that I get in the treestand about an hour and a half before dark. I just sit and wait. I don't do any calling. The biggest thing about this method is to always have the same people going to he bait pile and the stands. The yotes get used their smell being associated with the bait and aren't as leary.
