I just saw it. Very good. I would give it 4 stars out of 5. I will buy it when it hits the shelves and add it to my western collection.

I saw another picture of her and she was wearing those glasses also...  ::)

It looks like Kim Darby was 22 years old when she played Mattie Ross.   :-\  And I checked after MGM's post.  Good golly!  I couldn't believe Hailee Steinfeld was 14 when she did this movie!   :o  Girls didn't look like that when I was 14!   :'(  They wore pigtails made for dipping in the inkwells...  :-\  As if anybody remembers the desks with the inkwells in the upper right hand corner...  :-\

I'm gonna take some Geritol and go to bed...   :-[

say what ya want, but the acting in the original was horrendous.  now i know they made movies back then with men in them, and they could act, too.   i have damn near every one of clint's westerns.   you believed his roles when you watched his movies.

Ok that is really not a fair comparison.  That's like saying you'd rather have an 85 mustang as oppose to a 65 mustang... Both are mustangs, both will get you to the grocery store, but the 65 had sooo much more class.  Same way w/ the John Wayne cheese vs. Clint Eastwood spaghetti.  Both were westerns, both had shoot em up action, but John Wayne is such an American Icon, it's classy.  You can't tell me that you can watch the Shootist, then turn around and watch a crappy ripoff of a decent Louis L'Amour novel (Insert Spaghetti Western here) and say John Wayne's movie didn't have way more class and finess.

Quote
I think towards the end of his career John Wayne developed a bit of stiffness in his personality.  His characters were very different in his early movies such as Stagecoach and The Sands of Iwo Jima, to name two.

St762

That's because like any actor, when John Wayne first started out, he had to act to impress people to keep acting.  Once he became established he had the luxury of brining his own persona into his movies.

Now, not being a huge fan of the cheesy westerns or spaghetti westerns,  I would suggest the following as some of the best Westerns I've ever seen...

Quigley Down Under (Ok so technically an Eastern, but he wears a cowboy had and carries around a Sharps)
Tombstone - Prolly Val Kilmer's best role ever.
You Know My Name -  Sam Elliot plays an awesome role in this one...
Open Range... Hands down the best western I've ever seen in my short life.  Robert Duvall is such an awesome actor.  Not to mention Kevin Costner redeems himself in this role.
I'm voting 3rd party in this election by writing in Jesus Christ for president.  Sadly even if this were an option most of you would still vote Republican because "It's a two party system."

Shootall, I was talking about Clint Eastwood's spaghetti westerns . The Duke is my hero, a real man's man. Most of those dudes in the new one likely wear panties under their costume!

Doing a remake of any popular film is asking for trouble...let the original stand.    Next, somebody will try to do a remake of "It's a Wonderful life"..not a good idea either.
Of course a remake will guarantee a certain percentage of curiosity ticket buyers..so it's a start.  Frankly, I would rather see a bit more originality than to follow a once-done, beaten path.

Speaking of Clint Eastwood I watched The Outlaw Josey Wales for the umpteenth time the other night. That is one of if not my favorite western one of the best in my opinion. The book it is based on "Gone to Texas" is also a good read and the author wrote a sequel called "The Vengeance Trail of Josey Wales" not as good as the original but still a decent read.

Actually speaking of Clint Eastwood - I've personally never been a big fan of westerns myself (just not my genre), but his newer stuff - both acting and directing, has been SUPERB.  Gran Turino, and ESPECIALLY Mystic River, are some of my favorite films of the last few years.

John Wayne and Kim Darby? How does it get better than that? Or even as good? The original was a great movie.

They didn't remake the John Wayne movie, they went back to the book and made a more accurate movie based on the true grit novel.  I like the John Wayne true grit very much myself, but this one has it beat.  Usually i would agree that they shouldn't make re-makes of old movies, but in this case it worked well.

You are not kidding about primetime TV. Hardly anyone bothers with scripted shows anymore it is all crap "reality" TV. I am still trying to figure out exactly who's reality these shows represent it certainly isnt anyone I know.

There's still good stuff on TV.  Anybody wanting an absolutely, positively amazing viewing experience should go back and watch the first season of AMC's "The Walking Dead" if you haven't already.  HBO's "True Blood" has got a great storyline too, though with it's nudity and profanity levels it's definitely not for the prudish types.

ABC's Lost which just went off this year certainly wasn't bad either.

MGM. Can't afford cable or dish, just regular tv here. Lost was pretty good the first year then went to crap. You never knew whether you were watching then, or now. Tv has now gone from Andy Griffith to ellen degenerate.  >:( >:( POWDERMAN.  :o :o

My first impression was WHY? Buttttt, I look at it like this. If it brings a great story to a new generation then the Why becomes WHY NOT? Besides, sometimes differant views of a good story can be just as entertaining and I love a good story. I look forward to seeing it. :)

HUMMMM--& and extra HUMMMMMM to the longhaired lawyer---we actually used those inkwells.
I digress----Rooster,well the new Rooster is good I agree--butttt---he aint John Wayne.
The rest of the cast was better, I agree, except for the horse trader----no one in this world has ever been a better character actor than the first--remember him in Cool hand Luke.
What has me a little bit in a quandry is Pepper---dang there aint nobody better than the first---but the second looks like the first should have looked---dang it all he was a good lookin outlaw that looked like an outlaw of that time period looked---and it aint handsom.
Overall the second is better---but that John Wayne is Rooster---and i don't care what you say.
Blessings

Few actors these days even compare to the truly great ones of years past. The "Duke" was a true American Icon whether you were a fan or not. Personaly my favorite actor was a tie between three. Jimmy Stewart, Kirk Douglas, and Walter Brennan.  :) But the "Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance" with Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne and Lee Marvin.....well it just don't get much better than that.  :)
