True Grit 2010-5 stars

My wife and I saw the new True Grit this afternoon. I thought it was excellent. Best movie I have seen in a long time. Doesnt follow the original script real close. I highly recommend seeing it.

The wife and kids went on CHRISTmas night. The movie was very slow and quirky, the actors stiff and unlikeable. I myself would not recamend it to fans of the original. The Coen brothers ruined this classic.

  i remember everyone watching john wayne movies when i was little.  cant say i much liked them then.   
  then with the release of this movie, i got to wondering if i was just a kid with no taste or if there was another explaination.   this weekend, true grit was on t.v..  so i watched it.    john waynes acting was about as bad as anything i have ever seen.  horrible.   i would never waste my time watching another movie of his. 
   i havent seen the new version...but it can not be any worse than the original.

The first negative review of this movie out of maybe 60 I have seen. Me, I thought the girl was an amazing actress. Very likable. Damon and Bridges are supposed to be unlikeable, at least initially. Damon is a fool, and Bridges is a high functioning alcoholic. Then we learn that they have attributes that counter the initial impressions. Went a little downhill in the 2nd half. Then I thought about it later, especially about the ending, and it made a lot of sense. She ends up becoming a very ordinary, and somewhat unlikeable person. Which is a bit of a letdown. But it makes sense given what she went through in her childhood, that she did not have a lot of trust and love left. The gang gets lot of positive comments. Apparently because they are true to the book, which I never read.

You are right , I have not been in a move theater in many many years. Bur have worn out a couple of copies of the mountain men, with Charlton Hesston.

I think towards the end of his career John Wayne developed a bit of stiffness in his personality.  His characters were very different in his early movies such as Stagecoach and The Sands of Iwo Jima, to name two.

I guess the young have been exposed to all the tricks of Hollywood with all the speical effects its hard to watch an actor get the message across with out them. I admit it is easier to watch than to use ones own mind . In the John Wayne era movies it was love making and the viewer had to use their imiganation , today it is an act in vivid color. Shame really the mind must be shocked to be entertained instead of stimulated .

As another person wrote in the "other" True grit post and I complety agree with.  In his movies, John Wayne wasn't acting, he was being Marion Morrison. (His real name) I just cannot comprehend how anyone calling himself a man, would not agree with John Wayne's fundamentals??? I mean, I can understand not liking someone. But that aside, what he portrayed, what he did in most every movie he was in are things most men could only hope to be. He portrayed a mans man.
I'm proud to say he is one of my heros. JMHO

  John Wayne was one-of-a-kind..he was a man's man and what a man should be (to quote my wife).  I do not care at all for most of today's movies..too "touchy feely"  more like what women have traditionally watched.  The wife and I enjoy similar movies; from today's crop most of  the really good ones ar being made by Robert Duvall, Tom Selleck or Mel Gibson..most of the others are for the most part, either pablum or filth.

My wife and went out to see this last nite. Overall I liked the movie.
I agree with the person who said Mattie Ross stole the show. She was excellent, much better that the origional. I didn't like Matt Damon at all. (usually dont) The actor who took Robert Duvals part (dont know his name but did recognise him) was also very believable. Rooster or should say Jeff Bridges was good. Better if you don't compare him to John Wayne's Rooster.

I definitely feel it's worth seeing. By and large I very much like the new and improved westerns coming out. They ain't no speghetti (sp) westerns, but they are more realistic and believable. At least from my perspective.

The new movie stuck much closer to the original book than the John Wayne classic.  While I love John Wayne movies (cheesy as they might be) I enjoyed the new movie much better than the classic.  Mainly because it didn't have Glen Campbell's shameless promotion of his singing career mixed in w/ his shoddy acting.  Granted Glen had mad guitar skills, that still doesn't mean I want to hear him sing all through the movie. 

Jeff Bridges did a good job playing a drunk US Marshall,  Matt Damon did a fine job playing a pompus, arrogant Texas Ranger.  The banter between the two was very funny without going out of the way to make it appear so.  The little girl who played Mattie was OUTSTANDING!  Considering this was her first movie ever.  Berry Pepper makes about a 15 min appearance playing Lucky Ned Pepper at the end of the movie and did a good job playing a villian.  If the acting seemed stiff it was because the way the book was written was stiff. 

I found the attention to detail in the movie very facinating.  Down to the ebony handles w/ the ivory shamrock that was on Lucky Ned's revolver. 

There were a few things I missed in the movie, compared to the old one.  One was the General Sterling Price (John Waynes Cat), and the other was the fact that Chin Li had only about a 2 second appearance in the movie.  In the original he gave John Wayne a hard time and it was funny. 

All in all I was very sceptical about the new version but in the end after I saw it, I was very pleased.  It's a great movie to go see and I was also impressed that the Coen Bro's didn't add any excessive language to the script.  I think if the F bomb would have dropped in the movie I would have hated the movie just for the fact that John Wayne wouldn't have said it in his movies.  Its definately a must see.

Good review Singleshotsam.

I was skeptical about the new movie because I enjoy the original so much. It's a favorite that my family enjoys watching because of the humor AND the cheesy acting.   Based on your review I'll look forward to watching the new movie.  Sounds like I need to read the book also.

  say what ya want, but the acting in the original was horrendous.  now i know they made movies back then with men in them, and they could act, too.   i have damn near every one of clint's westerns.   you believed his roles when you watched his movies.

I thought Jeff Bridges version of Rooster Cogburn was meaner and dirtier that John Wayne's version, and although I cant stand Matt Damon he was much better as Mr. Labeof than Glen Campbell.

And I agree the little girl was excellent. My wife disliked her and liked Kim Darby better ::)

I feel sorry for anyone who has to think for more than a quarter second looking at those two pics.  Maybe some show the actress in the older one in a more flattering manner, but with just those two - she reminds me of the drunken women who are hitting on anything with a pulse at the bar near closing time.  Sure if there's nothing else going on you might take em home, but it ain't for no lasting relationship.  The newer actress is beautiful.

EDIT: Well, looking up some bio info on the two it seems the newer actress is only 14 years old.  Definitely couldn't tell from the pic.  I'll still say she's pretty, but she needs to age a few years before the thoughts towards her go too impure :).

I've watched the original a few times. It sucks. I haven't seen the new one yet but I'm sure it'll be better. :)
