Questions about Stevens 200

Got a Stevens 200 in 25-06.  Worked on the trigger and have it shooting real smooth, and not near as heavy as when I got the gun.  But that cheap stock has to go.  What stock will it fit into without a lot of reworking.  In otherwords can I drop it in a Bell and Carlson?

I didn't have problem with function of the stock but I didn't care for the blue color. I had mine Duracoated.

Mine is a late gun and mine you would have to find one that would accept the magazine parts.

I think the biggest thing you need to worry about is the spacing between action screws.  the newer stevens/savages are 4.4 and the older models are 4.25.  Not 100% sure, but i think any stock for a savage with a blind magazine and 4.4" screw spacing will work.  Someone please correct me if i am wrong, as I am also looking for a replacement stock.

I have the same rifle, and what I did was to epoxy in a square rod from in front of the front screw to the front of the stock. The stock is now stiff and causes no problems at all. It is on loan to my brother inlaw, but when it comes home it will get a camo paint job.

The 25-06 is a long action (LA). All Savage and Stevens LA rifles have 5.062 inch spacing between the action screws. It is sort of difficult to find a drop in stock for the LA rifles.

Sky sent an e-mail to Bell and Carlson asking this question.  Got a reply this morning.  Bell and Carlson Rep said yes the long action Savage stock would fit.

Any stock that fits a long action Savage 110 will fit as long as the screw spacing  is correct. Below is cut and paste from Boyds rifles stock web page:

NOTE: The Savage Models 11, 12 & 16 AND Stevens 200 Short Action have the same action as the Model 10; this Short Action measures 7 1/4" from Center to Center on the action screws or 4.275 from front trigger guard screw to front action screw. The Savage Models 111, 112 & 116 AND Stevens 200 Long Action have the same action as the Model 110; this Long Action measures 8" from Center to Center on the Trigger guard screws or 5.062 from front trigger guard screw to front action screw.

IMPORTANT: WE DO NOT AT THIS TIME MAKE THE STOCK FOR THE 1ST GENERATION SHORT ACTION (1958-1987) 4.522" OR THE 3RD GENERATION CENTER FEED MAGAZINE SHORT ACTION (2005 AND UP) OR THE 3RD GENERATION LONG ACTION CENTER FEED MAGAZINE DESIGN.

I took the stock off my Stevens last night.  Inswide the forarm is "Savage 110".  I read this to mean it is a Savage 110 stock.  That is what I am going to order.

Solved my dislike of the Stevens 200 plastic stock on my 7mm-08 by laminating 3/4" maple wood from an old bed headboard and making a stock.

Can't wait to see what you decide on Sourdough, my 200 in 25-06 seems to be my go to rifle for everything now a days. I really want to get that factory stock off and put something good under it.

The only difference between the newer models and the older models is how the magazine is mounted.  You will have to slightly inlet the LA stagger-feed stock to work with the new center-feed.

FYI Boyd'S now has stocks to fit the Stevens 200 center feed,Blind Mag , 4.40 spacing. They just came out. :)

ordered a thumbhole laminate yesterday.  Can't wait to get it installed and get rid of the factory piece.   ~120 bucks, shipped.  It is supposed to be finished and ready to install, but that never works perfectly on a rifle stock.

Sourdough,

Just finished putting a Bell and Carson stock on a 1903 Springfield, the out side of the stock was nicely finished.  The inside was a bit rough, I glas bedded the action full length and the first two inches of the rear of the barrel to improve the fit, then floated the remainder of the barrel..   

The first group with 150 grain Speer Ballistic tips went into .751 inch at 100 yards, this was from a new Springfield 30-06 barrel never put on an action made in January of 1944 with less than 15 rounds through the barrel.

Unless you get the model with the full length aluminum bedding block, I would glas bed the stock to gain strength and improve the fit.  My experience is the the ones without the full block need glas bedding.   And I believe that glas bedding would not hurt those with the full block either.

I installed a Hogue stock with the full length aluminum bedding block on a Mauser with a Shaw Barrel and it shoots between 1/2 and 3/4 inch without glas bedding it.

I had to shorten the front trigger guard screw on the Springfield, the Bell  and Carson stock is not as thick as the military stock there, it bottomed out before fully securing the trigger guard to the action in the stock.
