Will the 17 HM2 go the way of the DO DO bird?
« on: December 29, 2010, 02:18:01 AM »
I was thinking about getting one for squirrel hunting, but I only see 4 manufactures even chambering rifles for it.  Savage, CZ, Ruger, and H&R.  I see 4 different brands of ammunition on the shelf all with the same bullet and velocity.  Is this catridge soon to be obsolete?

H&R already dumped it a couple years ago.  :-\

I think it is a neat round.
Already have a 17HMR so a Mach 2 is really low on my list of things to get.
22LR works for small game, standard velocity with a 40 grain bullet makes a small hole in and a small hole out and little lood fills the game coat.
the little 17 while holly cow accurate does a number on animals.
I think if the Mach 2 came out first the 17HMR would be on the ropes.
From what I have read in the gun rags all the 17M2 and 17Grain HMR stuff is loaded by CCI and private labeled.
But if you look at the boxes it comes in they all look like the CCI plastic Box.

It could go away some day like the 5mm rf, but with this one you could just rechamber it to 17 HMR in most bolt and break action guns.  Larry

This has been beaten more times than Ike Turner beat Tina! Buy rifles and ammunition to demonstrate support for the caliber, or don't. Eley ammo has proven itself to be exemplary, available, and reasonably priced. Buy it by the case and stock up for life if necessary.

I think I would like the caliber as well.  I love the accuracy my HMR gives, but it is too much gun for squirrel hunting.

I agree if you're hitting them in the body, but I really like the way mine takes the head off fox squirrels.  With a set of shooting stix and a tree to lean against, any squirrel that stops for a minute within sight out to 75 yds. or even more is meat in the pot.

Especially rimfires are subject to the Fad phenominon. You can't make your own ammo, you are tied to the whims of marketing. Also all the rimfires have to compete with the 22 long Rifle, and when it is all said and done that is a very tall order.

Who really knows. It does cause me concern as I love the little thing and wouldn't give it up for nuthin'.
Personally, I just keep buying boxes to have it on hand. I now have a couple bricks worth. I should be fine but will continue to buy when I see it offered. ;)

I haven't found the Eley stuff locally. I would love rotty some. The CCI shoots wonderfully so I really have no reason to change.

Its like it was with primers, if it gets thin the price will go up (hey, the price on everything is going up) and maybe someday it wont be 'available'. Stock up as you can afford it, and whatever happens you will have it to shoot or use for trading stock. Better than money in a mutual fund!

One of the things that drew me to the 17HMR was a question was asked if the round did not catch on and Marlin said simple, it is the same gun as the 22 mag and if it does not catch on and dies out Marlin will make the rifles into a 22 Mag.
With the 17M2 if ammo ends like the Remington 5mm simple barrel swaps will turn the rifles into 22LR.
Most of the rifles chambered for it are great rifles and woul be just as great in the classic 22LR.  not as flat shooting but just as much fun to shoot and hunt with.

I hope the M2 stays around, love mine. I have a fair
supply of the Eley so will be OK for a while.

I really don't think they will go anywhere,  I would say it has just enough people to keep it around for a while,  and eventually if ammo gets cheaper it may becuase as popular as the .22 or at least close.

My Contender 17M2 23" bull rifle barrel will become an HMR or 17 Ackley Hornet if the Mach II goes away. No problems here but I would be suprised to see the mach II 'go away' as neat a round as it is!
