I have a Pietta Remington 1858, and have a loading question???
« on: December 29, 2010, 03:49:51 AM »
I have read a few places where people are loading from 15 gr. to 25 gr. by volume of course.. But the online manual is listed from 12 to 15 gr. I shot my Ruger Old Army with 25 to 35 gr., and read where some people were shooting 40 gr.  I know it was fine as the frame is a monster compared to the Pietta. My Pietta is the steel frame, and want to know what is the max load I should stick to in this gun.

I am using Goax FFFg powder and #11 caps. I had an old Army 1860 with not top strap and was shooting 20 gr. of FFFg with no problem at all. So I was thinking the 15 gr. load listed was a little on the light side for this revolver...

You are correct, it is light...probably for liability reasons. (?)
I shoot 24g of pyrodex in mine and dont consider it a max load.

I would agree with the "liability issues"  I also use 24-25 grains in my Pietta brothers "remmie".

I read two days ago about this same subject on another board.

Someone mentioned that the Pietta loading ram might not push the ball down completely onto 15 grains, even with an 1/8" wad.

15 grains is really light. I just fired off some 15 grain loads (3F) in my Uberti 1858 yesterday. A very easy load to shoot... sorta like shooing a 22. I use a loader for loading my cylinders so I can seat to any depth I want.

At the very least, make sure you can seat the ball against the charge. A felt wad under the ball will help take up a little room.

I have a Pietta remy sheriff and my loading comes out to 27 grains of Pyrodex p. It is a mid power load based on recoil, works fine.

I use 28grains of FFFg GOEX in both my Piettas, an 1860 Army and a Remmie NMA.  In fact the Remmie shot very erratically until I got up past 25 grains.

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking of starting at 25 gr. to see where the gun shoots and work from there..
