I was at the range Wednesday doing some shooting, checking sight settings for our upcoming deer season with the rifles I plan on using.  My Ruger Hawkeye in .358 Win chronographed my H322 load with the HDY 200gr FTX @ 2510fps.  Right in the ball park that Hornady suggested.  My field performance so far bares this out also.  By the way, my 7600 Rem pump in .35 Remington which
averaged 2404fps wth the HDY 200gr FTX +P+ load last time I tested it, was right at 2402fps on Wednesday!

It is for sure but don't forget I'm loading it in a front lock-up 7600 pump that is also chambered in 270 Win and 308 Win, two of the highest pressure rounds available without a belt on the case.  My weak link in the system is the .35 Remington brass.  I use only new
brass for hunting loads and each time they are reloaded they are checked for primer pocket expansion and incipient case head separation.
No issues to date and all loads for the 7600 are stored away from my standard .35 Rem loads and the boxes are strewn with orange stick on dots.  I intend to keep all fingers and eyes intact.

Due to our testing of many loads it is obvious that the 180gr. TTSX in both my whelen and 350RemMag is the best penetrating slug to date.  Being able to push this slug at close to 3000fps way out performs both the FTX and Nosler partition even at 225grs.  Both the partition and FTX looses a bunch of weight.  With the correct lighter bullet with high velocity now out performs any of the heavier rounds.  Bigger is no longer better.  There are certainly many newer generation slugs we have not tried but I would say the TTSX & Nosler AB are at the top of the list.  The velocities of the 35 remington are a bit slow for the TTSX but the FTX does come apart at higher velocities but good for the slow 35rem.   WHO HAS DATA FOR 35 WHELEN AND SUPERPERFORMACE POWDER?

Yep, the TSX/TTSX is a game changer in the penetration department. In terminal performance, they work well in some calibers & not so well in others. If they work for you in this bigger cal, why not add them to the mix.

I bought a T/C Whelen for Louisiana's PW season this year.  The Hornady Superformance is the least expensive ammo on around. Not only that, but shoots into one not so ragged hole from my Encore.  With other brands running $40 to $45 per box and the Hornady SP running $30, it is a no brainer in my book.   We don't have elk and moose running around down here.  I have no qualms about shooting deer with this round.

I am reloading for too many calibers right now to start loading for the Whelen.  When I do I will be going to a premium bullet in the 225 to 250 grain class.  But right now! For deer!  The Hornady SP it is.  By the way, it does have a whop to it on the shooter end.  There is a noticeable difference between the Hornady and the Remington.

I bought a TC Encore in 35 Whelen for Louisiana's primitive weapon season as well.  I got the 28 inch heavy fluted because it was the only one I could find at the time.  I topped it with a Burris Fullfield E1 3x9x50 scope. I tried Remington, Fusion, and Hornady Superperformance loads.  The load that it liked the best was the 200gr Hornady.  It has a bit more recoil than the others but is manageable. I decided to put it on the chronograph and was quite surprised.  I was getting between 2970 - 2980 fps from the Hornady's with great accuracy.  Not only is this going to be my "not so primitive" primitive weapon, but it may well become my primary rifle. The 35 Whelen is a great caliber.  The more I shoot it and read about it, the more I like it.  Best of luck to everyone this upcoming season.

After re-reading this thread I ran back into this post.  The whelen "cannot" use the "Superformance" powder that you purchase.  When I purchased the Superformance powder and loaded it in the whelen using 30-06 data it did not burn correctly.  Since my first post Hornady has now started producing the whelen with superformance powder (special blends).
