Already emailed my contact at a Ruger distributor and put my request in for one.  Trying to decide now on the scope...Burris or Leupold.  With it being 1/2 the price of the Steyr or less, it will sell like the proverbial hotcakes.

My first impresssion is....what kinda abomination is this????  Yeah I'd take one...but....a cool hodgepodge of left over parts????  Watching this one hit the gun rags will be fun!

I like it, but I would really like to see someone revive the straight-pull bolt-action, like a Swiss K31 in .308.

Don't know if you can convert that one to semi-auto.

Personally, I'd go with an AR-10 variant, but I can see some utilitarian value to this rifle...ugly as it is.  I'm not sure that I'd need 10 rounds in a bolt rifle that I'd use to hunt with.  If I needed that kind of firepower...again back to the AR-10 variant because I'd probably be in a situation that revolved around a firefight.

With a 5 round mag I think it would make a neat truck gun, as long as it could shoot.

I sure hope that Bart Skelton does a review on it, I love reading how he rants and raves about how amazing pretty much every Ruger he has ever touched has been...including the horrible ones.  My personal favorite...a Ruger mini-14 that was solidly performing in the 2-3MOA range that he managed to get 4 out of 5 shots (once) into an inch.  The title of the article:  "Accurate at Last".

Well, on the odd occasions where the thought of this type of rifle has even crossed my mind I thought of the SMLE RFI 2A1 in 7.62 Nato.  Now, I wouldn't cut the one I have up to do it, but if I found a 2A1 that had already been irretrieveably butchered I might cobble it up into a scout.   :-\

Otherwise I like that rifle about as much as I respect Jeff Cooper...  :D  At least that would be my opinion... if I had an opinion...  :-\  which, of course, I don't...  :-[  I'm just sayin'...    ;D

The scout concept was to mount a low power scope infront of the action so the stripper clip could be used in a 98 mauser or Springfield action.
By having a detachable mag you really do not need the forward scope and a standard dangerous game 1-5 power scope can be used in stead.
the standard scope would fit in most gun cases or scabbords for on horse or ATV.
Other than tearing up Col Cooper's Idea.
The rifle looks neat.
I like the peep sights and wish Ruger would offer them on some of their standard line of rifles.
The next question is who's magazine?
AR10, FN Fal, M1A / M14, or one of Rugers designs?

I tried the "Scout" concept in the past. I did not care for the glare in the scope lens with a low Sun to your back while hunting. i too will pass.

As much as I don't like bolt actions, it does look like a nice 'all around' concept.  Many states do not let you hunt with a semi-auto, for those it would be good, and the removable mag makes it a very good 'trouble' gun.  If you want one gun that will handle most chores, it looks to be a good one.  I do hope it take M14 mags rather than a dedicated 'Ruger only' mag.  No, it's not the best choice for many chores, but it will still handle them.  And for the man who wants it all in one gun, I think it would come pretty close.  44 Man

Other than slaughtering a sounder of pigs, I can't imagine needing 10 rounds for hunting.  As I said on another forum I could load the mag, take my limit of 4 antelope in wyoming, a deer and a couple elk in Colorado, and still be ready for next year.


For a "trouble gun" I think a semo-auto would be my preference.  It would be for the wholesale slaughtering of pigs, too.

Just my personal preference, there is no right ot wrong on this one.
