S&W 28-2 .357 Highway Patrol
« on: December 30, 2010, 07:45:15 AM »
I have been looking for a .357 revolver in a 4 inch barrel for awhile now.
This was in a small shop in a small town.
Not a safe queen--former owner was a cop. Been shot and the blue is deep and good or better. Has some leather drag on the muzzle.
Wanted a Colt Python but you boys have driven them out of my price range.
I do like Smiths a lot though.
$550, less than I have seen at other places but not cheap.
Has Pachmayrs on it which will bee replaced by some stags.
I will post some pictures soon.
Blessings

Mr. William, nice pistol, bought one last winter and really like it..paid $550..also picked up a 6 inch model several years ago..they are two of my favorites..mostly shot 38's out of them..where are you going to get the stag handles??? I have a 29 6 in with those rubber pack.s on it ... I hate em, but haven't found something to replace with..did pick up a set of original smith grips for what was to be a 29..did not fit, but I was able to use them on another revolver...enjoy..can't wait for the photos...

You mean like this one?
Mine has the factory over sized smooth sided target stocks I like.
This one lives in the night stand table.

I have a couple of sets from William Jennings---I like his product and his attitude towards business----GOOD-Square guy.

YUP, MC. If they were wood I might keep it as it is but the Pachmayrs are not my cup of tea for carry.

William:  the Highway Patrolman is one of the more enduring examples of S&Ws handiwork.  It is a work horse and will eat any 357 load you canput throught it, all day long.  I ahve owned mine for at least 30-35 years (gittin' so old I cain't remember any more).  Mine came with a 6" bbl and after about 20 yeras sent it back to S&W for a rebarrel  - wanted a 4" but got a 3.5" instead - just like mcwoodducks picture but in the S&W blue.  BTW - those revolvers came in a black matt finish and S&W took mine from a matt finish 6" to a deep blue 3.5" and she is my bbq gun.  You should get it now................

Mikey
If I told you I got it the day I saw it will you not tell the Hen?
Couldn't pass it up.
There are two other guys on another board that I have become friend with---we live kinda close to each othe though it is a bit of a chore to get together. We Met in my old home town of Livingston---which is about the same travel distance foreach, bout 80 miles---and hit three shops. One had three good'uns a model 10, a mountain gun that was a law-dogs gun he had converted to a DAO, and this model 28-2.
They tried to beat me into buying both---but I stood my ground.
The 10 was in better shape but I was drawn to 28---and it is not in bad shape at all--just shot a bunch---but, it will be shot more. I will post some pics as soon as I can get my hands on the chord to the computer.
I have found some elk antler stag grips on the net that I am going for.
You know I can't leave well enough alone.

Nice looking Model 28.  I love my 4" version, and I was able to acquire some original S&W Target Grips for mine.  I won't ever get rid of mine, either.  Still kicking myself for passing up a mint 4" model a couple of years ago for $450 at the local gunshop.  It was quite a bit nicer than mine, but mine has more character.  If I ever see another deal like that I won't pass it up.

Can't go wrong with a 28. My model 28(no dash) was made in '58, beat up during use with the Georgia State Police and still took two deer clean in 2008. Uglier than sin but still works. She is retired now. I figured half a century was enough standard use. But she is still on standby which is why she was made.

Dang - I wish I had known that sooner. I turned down a nice M10 in DAO as I thought it would be too expensive to convert back.

Very true indeed! Many of the old DAO Model 64 PD guns were given  hammer changes  by some distributors to please the private market when they were released to the public.

I bought a 6" 28-2 with a leather holster and a couple boxes of shells from a guy at work for $240 about 5 years ago.  Best gun deal I ever made.  This gun is a real shooter, I can put cylinder after cylinder of .38 rounds into the X ring of a standard military silhouette target all day long.  It resides about 3 feet from my bed in my wife's underwear drawer, God help the punk who ever ends up on the receiving end of it!

William;  Nice find.   I been eyeing these model 28's (large frame) in 357mag with a 6" barrel in blue or nickel finish.  Lately these are rare and bring a hefty price too.  I missed out getting a ruger redhawk when they offered the 357 & 41mags too.    The S&W model 57 is the large frame in 41mag i believe.           CZY

My older brother had a S&W model 29 w/6" barrel 44mag in nickel finish when he passed away and we haven't found it in over 10 years now.  God only knows where it is, he hid it that good. The family says he had chrome plated revolver and i found the orginal S&W grips for the model 29 along with other stuff.

Sad to say you are correct.

Last fall one of my best friends passed. He was truly one of my best friends I miss him VERY much. The greatest gift he gave me was some of his Wisdom and all of his Friendship.

That being said he gave me quite a few things one was a Highway Patrolman so it is very special to me. He also gave me a Savage 24 22mag/410 there is a much longer story but that is also a special item for me

I miss my buddy CW(Crazy Wayne)
