Handis SUCK.. Fur down.. Barely
« on: December 31, 2010, 03:30:09 AM »
Went out this morning with my FoxPro and my .223 Bull barrel Handie. Set up on field and called for 10 minutes. Noticed movement to my left at 50y. Picked up a dog yote in my scope and squeezed of the shot. Turned the nasty dog a flip. I noticed him trying to get up. So I break down my Handi to reload and CRAP...DANGIT...DADDERNIT... shell casing is stuck. I spent the next 5 minutes poking, prying, cutting sticks trying to get the casing out. I look at the dog and hes got to his feet and just sitting there very hurt. He starts to wander off. I finally picked out the casing with my Benchmade and CRAP... I chipped the blade on my knife. I reloaded and could easily track the dog in the snow. I followed him 75 yards into a thicket. I picked him up in my scope on the other side and squeezed off the shot. Head shot...dead dog. This casing stuck also. This has never happened in my Handi. I hate it now. This wont do. Its very accurate and Ive yet to miss a dog with it, but I guess it will be retired for range play. Im in the market for a good bolt action .223. Can someone post any links to stuck casing threads? I know this is common in Handies.

That makes us two dumb rednecks.  The ejector pops the spent case totally out of the chamber.  The extractor backs it out only about a quarter of an inch so you can pick it out with your fingers.  The cases seldom or ever stick.  All the new Handi Barrels are extractor.  Tim has a method to make them extract longer, to be removed easier.

My barrel has the extractor. It usually pops the shell out on the ground. But not today.

If it kicks them out on the ground, you have the ejector, not extractor.  DP

dirty  or greasy cases, dirty chamber, or hot loads can be problematic also.

IF YOUR HANDI with your hands,  ::) in the FAQ's is a extractor pseudo conversion from your extractor.

I like ejectors in my shotguns and don't mind them in my rim fires, but detest them in a CF rifle. I have converted all mine to extractor.

I always carry something to get a stuck case out when I have my handi. I have a 45-70 and did have a couple cases stick. Mine is an ejector, I don't mind it at all. When I open the action the case pops out and hits me in the belly if I don't catch it. The spent case will be at my feet. Fortunately I have a belly made for just this. ;D
I use the 45-70 for everything but birds and prairie dogs.

Extractor or ejector handi's are some great machines.

If this is the first time this has happened I'd check brass and loads right off of the bat!  Sounds like a load problem to me.

Other than loads too hot, the most common cause for sticking brass is not wiping oil or solvent out of the chamber before loading, see the Handi Basics 101. I use  alcohol on a patched bore mop on a section of cleaning rod to clean the chamber before I load to insure it's not a problem.  ;)

I have two ejector Handi's on which I installed a smal notch, into which you can put a small screw driver under the rim. This will remove a stuck case in a jiffy. You find a write up on my web site, how to do it.

I get the ought stuck case during gopher shooting where I fire as much as a 100 rounds. Powder blow back gets into the chamber and sticks the case.
A clean up is in order.

Dang it... You know I bet this is the problem. My handi has been stored and I left a coating of Breakfree in the barrel and chamber. I forgot to clean it before I went out this morning. I noticed some oil on the breech face when I got home. Ill give it a good cleaning. Ive always shot Hornady V-Max shells and never had a problem.

Lots of info in the FAQs on ejectors including Fred's manual ejector notch, I've only modified my 35 Remington barrel, never had to use it, but have since converted it to a modified factory style extractor so sticking brass is a non-issue even with hot loads or a fouled chamber.  8)

My 223 and 243 barrels have the notch cut in them. I carry a small screwdriver in one of the loops on the stock shell carrier. Works great.

I keep mine clean and dry when I use them and never have any problems. I am more of a hunter than a bench rest guy so I much prefer ejectors over the cheaper to produce extractors and do not have problems with my ejector barrels....<><....:)

Store your Handi muzzle down in the safe. That way any excess oil runs down the barrel and not back into the receiver and chamber. ;) That's an old trick I learned from some ol' timer on here. ;D

I'm sorry, but the extractor eliminates all the problems.....cutting grooves, digging them out with screw drivers, carrying a rod, etc. etc. I don't use ejectors because of all the above, plus I don't enjoy crawling around in snow, dirt, manure, mud, or weeds looking for cases.  I'll stick with my extractors.

You know I kinda agree with ya. If I have to carry a dang rod I might as well carry my muzzleloader.
