Ga cannon/mortar folk.

I need some insight and info to build a bowling ball mortar. Hit me up with some info if you have some.

I don't have access to any machines. I can't find any kind of tank that will work. When I do find one that will the place wont even let me buy it. I told them they could cut it open so I couldn't refill it. No way they would do it.

From the Stickies:  "The Pressure tank need to make the expansion chamber for a bowling ball mortar for is the 300 CF, DOT 3AA2400 made by Taylor Wharton."

This is our recommendation for a bowling ball mortar tube.  When you go into the welding supply store, don't mention anything that would give them a clue that you want the cylinder for an artillery piece.  They don't want any liability if you blow yourself up so they won't sell you one if you tell them you are making a cannon or mortar from it.  You may have to buy a fill of gas to make them think you are buying it to weld with.

You might ask to buy the top half of (a 300 cu.ft) one that has failed its periodic hydrostatic recertification/test.
If ya have to buy a new one- they're about $400.  When they fail hydrostat. testing- they're scrap metal.
Tell 'em you want it to make a gong or a bell.  That should ease thier liability fears.

Its a fairly common re-use for them.
I've built a couple in years past myself.
Ya weld a chain over the valve protector cap to hang it, and when whacked with a big hammer-
It sings a song you can hear for about a mile.

At least out here, a cylinder undergoes two tests, a visual one and a pressure one.  They can fail either.  Try to get one that failed the visual test.

Dan has it correct, that is why they are hanging as a wind chime.  There are better ways to build a bowling ball mortar than using a pressure tank.

I am all ears or in this case all eyes. I am thinking that I will have to employ a machine shop in my endeavours. I lack a lathe or much of anything else I will need. So please guide me in the bowling ball mortar way.

Reply #1 has a link to the start of my build.  This won't be a fast project since the steel currently is 1300 miles away.

I can always notch a scrap pallet and we can strap it to that and tie that down.
