.223 Barrel Length?
« on: January 01, 2011, 03:44:00 AM »
I was going to have a .223 barrel put on my SB2 reciever. Which barrel, either the 20" or 22" barrel is more acurate or prefered?

Barrel length has nothing to do with accuarcy. The longer the barrel the more sight radius you have with open sights, making it easier to hit hit targets. Scopes negate this.

The 22 inch barrel might have 100fps more velocity.

The choice of preference is yours. Either will serve you very well.

The 20" barrel would be a Superlight, probably the least popular for accuracy, the 22" bull barrel would be the best choice for accuracy from the many past discussions when this same question has been asked.  ;)

Hey Quick, Question for ya....Your Opinion....I have the 223 24 inch bull.  Got what I wanted and it shoots!!  Now that I live closer to the mountains of NC I find that it is a little heavy for my old bones....what do you think of cutting it down to say 18 inches ???  Or would I be better of buying a 22 inch standard weight ???

I hear ya on the heavy for old bones!!  :'( Cut it and enjoy it, I cut a 22" .223 barrel to 16½" for another member while I had it for an ejector to extractor conversion and he loves it. I cut one of my 28" 38-55 barrels to 18", it's a dream to carry in comparison, go for it!  ;)

Really liked the 24 bull when I got it but that was 6 years ago in another state.  Think I will weigh it out to see how much weight I can save.  Handi's are not light to start with but it beats buying another barrel, selling the old, etc.  Then I have money for a 357 barrel that I can take to Max.  Thanks.

I love this forum... I was agonizing about whether to cut my 22 inch 223 Handi barrel
and Quick mentioned that he had already done one. 16 1/2 inches was the length I was
dreaming about. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Quick had already done one. I
was going to get around to asking that very question someday....

Dunno, I don't think he ever chrono'd it, but here's a velocity comparison by the inch on the 204 Ruger.
