The world's largest army? America's hunters
Redding.com ^ | December 6, 2010

The worlds largest army

I don't spend my fall weekends tramping around the woods in pursuit of a buck, but a lot of my friends and neighbors do.
This blogger adds up all the hunters in just a handful of states, and comes to a striking conclusion:
The state of Wisconsin has gone an entire deer hunting season without someone getting killed. That's great. There were over 600,000 hunters.
Allow me to restate that number. Over the last two months, the eighth largest army in the world - more men under arms than Iran ; more than France and Germany combined - deployed to the woods of a single American state to help keep the deer menace at bay.
But that pales in comparison to the 750,000 who are in the woods of Pennsylvania this week. Michigan 's 700,000 hunters have now returned home. Toss in a quarter million hunters in West Virginia , and it is literally the case that the hunters of those four states alone would comprise the largest army in the world.
His point? America will forever be safe from foreign invasion with that kind of home-grown firepower.
Hunting -- it's not just a way to fill the freezer. It's a matter of national security.

Good post Ear!

I looked up the total number from 2006, from the US Fish and wildlife Service and the total was 12.5 million

The US Fish and Wildlife Service sponsors a National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation every five years. The questions are developed in concert with technical committee members from every state and with representatives of nongovernmental organizations. The last survey was conducted in 2006. The final report for 2006 will be issued in late 2007.

The most recent survey report (2006) indicated in that year:

    * 12.5 million people 16 years old and older enjoyed hunting a variety of animals within the United States. They hunted 220 million days and took 185 million trips. Hunting expenditures totaled $22.9 billion.
    * An estimated 10.7 million hunters pursued big game, such as deer and elk, on 164 million days.
    * There were 4.8 million hunters of small game including squirrels and rabbits.
    * They hunted small game on 52 million days and spent $2.4 billion on small game hunting trips and equipment.
    * 2.3 million hunted migratory birds such as doves or waterfowl
    * 1.1 million hunted other animals such as woodchucks and raccoons

The sad part is...........In 1996 there was around 30 million lic. hunters. The numbers are dropping drastically!
It is becoming a dying sport, and without the large number of hunters to keep the pressure on, the gun grabbers will have less trouble disarming the public.

NW_HUNTER. If they are going by hunting licenses sold that figure is off a great deal. Most, if not all states require no licenses for folks to hunt on their own property including their family or tenants of a farm. I haven't bought a license in probably close to 30 years but don't hunt anyplace but here. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Powderman!  Don’t know about your state, but in most, game is considered public (state) property.  You need a license and must obey the seasons. Not really sure how it breaks down, state by state!  BG

Wasn't it Yamamoto who told Hito, that he would not invade America because there would be a rifle behind every blade of grass?   I could just envision a 12 million hunter march on DC, armed of course.  ;)  ;D

The statement that the United States will for ever be safe from foreign invasion isn't proving to be the case.  We have and are being invaded each and every day to the tune of about 20 million through our southern border.  It seems we're hunting four legged animals when it should be the two legged variety that we should concentrate on.

NW_HUNTER. Game laws are still in force, hunting dates, times, bag limit, etc, but we do not have to pay the state to hunt on our own property. We print a license on a piece of paper to deer hunt and TAG one when we kill it with our own tag. The deer can be checked in over the phone, we are not required to go to a check station. I think that's more of an exception rather than the rule then.  I know here in SC you still need to have a license even if hunting on private property.  You don't have to buy a WMA permit (part of the license required to hunt on public lands), but you still have to get a hunting license in general, as well as a "Big game permit" if you want to hunt deer or turkey.  Almost everyone I know just opts for the "Sportsmans package" which is a discounted bundle for $60/year (in-state) that includes pretty much everything you need to hunt/fish.

I see your from KY and Ky has some very good game laws. Most states are not as understanding as Kentucky unfortunately. I believe you would fall as an exception as someone else has stated. I'm sure Ky has lost it's number of hunters, as has other states and the future doesn't look to bright for our sport and for gun owners in general. :(

I know many many many gun owners who don't hunt. I would guess the true number is 50 to 100 million. Even if we feilded an army of 100 million, China could dwarf us un military size. That is why we need a technological advantage to win.

Fist off hunters are not an army! All the hunters in the country would not last five minuets against a well trained army with heavy weapons and artillery and air support.

Maybe they would'nt stand a chance against a well trained army, but atleast they could (if willing) stand up for what they believe in.

Beerbelly you are right.

It would take guerilla tactics dependent mostly on sapper techniques WITHOUT the use of firearms for a resistance force to survive. Everybody needs a copy of the "little Black Book".

"The Tigers Way", I think is the name of the book by J Pool, is a study of such tactics by many of the eastern armies includeing Russia, Korea, Afgan and others. Small forces that stand successfully against overwhelming odds.

The tactics reflect much of those reported durring the Vietnam war. If you are close enough to the enemy he won't shoot at you or bomb you.

I'm not talking about foriegn armies.

I'm talking about how small under armed and under funded forces successfully combat large well armed well funded forces.
