Gotta Love the Stevens 200!
« on: January 01, 2011, 06:10:21 PM »
The more I shoot my Stevens 200 .243 the more I like it. I went to the range yesterday and tested some loads using 70 grain Hornady SXSP bullets and IMR 4064 powder. In the picture below is the rifle and the two best groups.

41 grains yielded a 100 yard  group in which the first 4 shots measured .390!  I pulled the 5th shot  (my fault entirely.. too much pressure … had that great 5 shot group going!) and ended up with a flyer that opened up the group two 1.09.

42 grains yielded a 100 yard 3shot group measuring .550. I only had three of those so only fired a three shot group.

All this from a rifle that I have about $250 into including the rings, mounts and 3X9 Nikon Prostaff scope.  (All bought used) All I did to this rifle was put a lighter trigger spring in it. Did it myself using the spring steel from an old spinner bait.

During the same range session I shot my Remington 700 VLFS  fluted bull barrel Thumbhole stock  in .223 with a Nikon Monarch 6 X24 and a Remington 700 VSFS in .204 Ruger with a Leopold 4 X 20.  The best 100 yard group with the .223 was a  .401
5- shot and the best from the .204 was a .380 100 yard group.

So the  bargain basement .243 is shooting just about as well as the two high dollar rigs!

Whoda thunk it?

I think I’m gonna look for a used Stevens 200 in .223 and .308

Romans 10:13  "Whoever will call on the name of the Lord  will be saved!"

How are the stock triggers on these guns. I'm asking cause I can get one for 243 bucks plus tax, brand new in .243.

I have a few 200's.  My experience has been that they are a bit on the heavy side.  However, I do find them ok for a hunting rifle and decent enough for a day at the range.  Many opt to change for a Sharpshooter trigger or Timney.

The worse one I had is on a .25-06.  It's not only heavy but has a bit of drag.  The jury is still out, but this may be the first one I obtain an aftermarket trigger for.

For me, heavy trigger or not, the 200 is still a deal, especially at less than $250.

Honestly, I'm looking into a new gun because of my Remingtons. I got a 700 youth in .243 and will barely do 2" at 100 yds, 6" at 200. It ain't worth the ammo if that's all it can do. I'm totally unimpressed with the last few Rem. I have bought. Even my  22-250 bull barrel could not do moa. Wish I knew about Savage back then. I see a Marlin xs7 on the used shelf for 300 bucks with scope. I might go for it but will be heart broken if I find out why it's on the used rack.

The stock triggers are heavy but eazy to work on. I did the trigger on mine myself.

I would recommend you buy it. I don't regret buying mine!
