Wow! Haven't done this manly thing in a while!
« on: January 02, 2011, 06:23:33 AM »
I just mail ordered some fishing tackle. Man, it's been a while since I did anything like that. New surf casting rod and reel, and line. It'll be interesting to have some new gear to use. Shopped pretty extensively and noticed that Cabelas wanted to charge me tax so I bought the same stuff from Bass Pro shops instead. The stuff I wanted wasn't available locally. Locally the tradition hasn't caught up with the modern. I was looking for a braid friendly reel and an all graphite rod, but couldn't find it locally. Still selling the old tried and true stuff, but I wanted something that's made for braided lines. That's a trend that has hit surf fishing in other places and has been well established for a long time.

Never been a fan of braided line, but yeah, I love my fishing.  Truth be told when the weather is right it's a lot easier to get myself out on the river fishing than it is for me to get out into the woods hunting sometimes.  Mostly bass fishing for me though.  I'm only 6 miles from the coast and would LOVE to get in some good salt-water and surf fishing, but it's one of those things where my dad never did it, and I never really learned how growing up so the few times I've went I just haven't done well with salt water.   Matter of fact went out there for nearly 6 hours one day.  Came back with ONE fish - a Gafftopsail catfish (leave it to me to go saltwater fishing and come back with a catfish :)).

I'd almost like to try out a different reel just for change's sake, but my Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5500 just keeps ticking along.  By far the best fishing investment I've made :).  I've got a few other cheaper baitcasters as backups, but I rarely use them unless I've got the Abu rigged a certain way and just don't want to change it.

MGMorden,

I have an Abu also. Great reel. I've had it a long time. Likewise my spinning reels are by Penn. Reliable and durable in the extreme. I had to replace one after about fifteen years. I dropped it over the side of the boat in thirty feet of water.

I like the braided a lot. It doesn't have the memory that monofiliment does

You mean the state you live in wanted to charge you tax. I order from Cabelas and never get charged tax because it ships from our of state. Most likly Cabelas has a distribution center in your state so they must charge you tax.

Yeah - most of them are obliged to charge tax if they have a warehouse or center of operations in your state.  That's why if you shop at a large chain like Walmart or Home Depot's sites you'll get charged sales tax pretty much regarldess of state (unless you state doesn't have sales tax).

This is something they've been fighting against for a long time anyways.  If they could figure out the logistics all of them would be collecting sales tax, as the states see online shopping as a loophole to get out of paying taxes.

Even as it is, you're SUPPOSED to voluntarily pay the taxes at the end of the year.  On most state tax forms you'll see an item marked as "Use Tax" where you're supposed to report any online or out of state purchases and then figure up the taxes you owe to the state for the use of those items.  Most people don't bother, and it usually doesn't matter, but occasionally people will get caught on it when making big purchases (specifically, I've known a few people who have bought homebuilt aircraft kits, which run around $10k and up, and gotten caught on this).

We had a tax lady come around to a gun show the last time I had a table. Corse I only sold $3.65 worth of stuff that day and sent in my penny in an envelope.

So your administrative costs were about 100 times more than the tax itself? That sounds about right.
