My guess is that they were crapping all over someones house or nice clean car so they poisoned them. If that is what happened and they catch whoever did it the animal rights groups will have them in jail for life. It might even be the death penalty.  ;D

Blackbirds are hard to get rid of. I remember them as a kid in ILL. They'd roost in one woods, millions of them and a lot in town. I remember one family that was deluged with them roosting in several big trees in their yard, you couldn't walk accross their yard without getting bird doodoo on you. A bunch of neighbors went down there one night with their shotguns and cut loose on them. I forgot how many bushel baskets were filled with dead birds but there were several. It was repeated several times til they decided not to stay in town anymore.
I used to save yard mowing money or from odd jobs to buy shotgun shells. My Dad let me use his 12 ga dbl bbl on the blackbirds. Every evening they would pass over the field by our house to go to their roosts accross town. I decide that If I layed down in the field and jumped up real fast I could get them real close, it worked, in a way. They clouded the sky, I jumped up and fired both bbls. HEH, ya ever see a million birds all poop at the same time???? Not a pretty site. I actually had poop on my glasses, yep, I was looking up, my cap, my face, dripped from my nose, I  really got it. Seems that I was the only one in the family that didn't think it was funny. My sisters ragged on me for a long time about that. POWDERMAN.  :D :D :D :D :D :D

I think i can explain what is happening. That's approximately what happened in my neighborhood in 1970 after I got a Crosman 760 and a box of 10,000 BBs. Good to see that the youth of America still has a little mischief in it. BB guns still make fine Christmas presents.

A few hundred dead birds is nothing more than a drop in the ocean. It will be interesting to see if they can figure out what happened. Interesting that I just got back from Bodega Bay were the movie The Birds took place.

Interesting that it would only be one specie of fish. Drum are pretty hearty, and they tend to live in pretty clean water so I'd expect some more frail species to succumb.

The blackbirds probably died of heart attacks when they sdaw all the damage the NATURAL GAS CO.  has done to central Ar. we are in the middle of the fayetevile shale drilling operations here and if you drive around you will find roads tore up fences and beautiful pastures torn up etc.  Just picking on them of course but I believe we had some electrical storms in that area that night.   Jim

When I was in the service, off of the coast of North Carolina, we had a buoy tied to the deck of the ship we had just hauled aboard, upon which we were working.  The ship was about 1.5 miles off of the coast and descended upon by about 2,000 vireo-like birds, which covered the 180-foot Buoy Tender from stem to stern.  Some descended upon the buoy and its anchor chain eating crustaceans.  Others flew through open portholes, open doors, into air ducts, and any cavity they could find, even onto the Mess Deck where Wednesday Steak lunch was being served.

ALL of them DIED within 5 minutes of descending upon the ship.  We speculated they were exhausted from their 1.5 mile flight, but that didn't seem likely.  We speculated the ate/drank too much salt water and it dehydrated them.  Possibly.  We never knew the cause.  We were certainly not pleased to lose our steak lunch, which had to be wasted.  I do not recall what was served in its place.  SOS probably.  That seemed to be the rule rather than the exception.  I can't STAND SOS.  Never did.  Never will.

How would you like to have that job?

Wonder if you could just weigh them and divide  by the average weight of a dead blackbird.

weight/AWDBB= total birds...

Funny how many people just group any bird that is black in as a "Blackbird".  The bird they showed in the video was a grackle.  In general, blackbirds are not the ones that we so commonly find to be a nuisance.  It's the European starling, a non native bird that is the big nuisance to both humans as well as other birds.

I guess that's neither here nor there....

If I had to guess, it's a chemical release from a local chemical plant or industrial company.  You wouldn't believe how much stuff gets released into the air and goes unknown to all from such places.  Birds are sometimes very sensitive to certain chemicals.

In Beebe?
Can't imagine what plant that would be & why it was a one time kill.

Prior to the late 1990's, agricultural pursuits had dammed one end of Lake Apopka, in E. Central Florida for their aerial spraying operations (creating an air strip).  When permits expired and were not renewed, facilities were demolished and the lake reflooded by removal of the dam.  Following that flooding, the ground leached spilled and unreported chemical pesticides into the lake water at concentrations that killed a huge number of wading birds, white and brown pelicans, ducks, and shore birds/slow-wing-beaters (from duck hunting parlance).  The sky for 360 degrees around the lake was dropping birds at alarming rates.

So, if  this latest was a contaminated water source, birds in all directions and of all species would be directly affected.  I am betting on an aerial poisoning [shootall is on to something with Crop Duster], as Black Birds tend to flock together and fly, en-mass, toward a common destination making them likely to fly through some concentration of toxicant that took them down.

My father, brother and I usta ring in the new year with a shotgun blast or 3.  perhaps the folks of this town were celebrating a similar custom and spooked the flock, thus blasting down a few of them feather-rats.

Here is a thought; (and now I'm a little concerned here)  Has anyone considered terrorism?  You never know, someone can be releasing small amounts of toxins into the air and water.  Maybe it hasn't effected people yet but little critters, yes.  Have any of you heard that about 100 miles away from Beebe they have just discovered a mass killing of fish too?

YIKES!

I still think it was Martians but USA today has an article today claiming it was trauma. The birds hit something hard and had internal hemmorage.

This triggers my conspiracy theory detector. Doesn't it usuallyntake about a month to get lab results back when may be suspected? This took about a day before the official cause was released.

Convenient "Truth".  Most statistics [and explanations] are made up on the spot.  I don't buy into their explanation that it was fireworks which caused the trauma.

The biggest thing Beebe Ar. has going for it is a flea market on the wknd. I am still in the beliefe it has something to do with the gas well drilling and pipe lines being laid, it takes alot of water in the drilling process and several people have gotten vary rich selling water and others providing a place for the USED water to be pumped back into the ground, no telling what chemicals are in the used water.   Jim

I still think it's a chemical release or terrorism.  If it's a chemical release, they've yet to find it.  If it's terrorism, the Gov will keep a tight lid on it in order to prevent panic in the US, hence causing the market to plummet once again.

That's my theory.
