Bore Slugging question
« on: January 02, 2011, 01:36:08 PM »
I just got a 22" 44mag barrel of unknown origin and want to slug it to see if the bore is oversize. I have read the FAQ a couple of times and I think I am ready to try it  ??? I got all the stuff according to the link posted in the FAQ. my main concern is the #8 egg sinker that is to be driven through the bore mics out at .468.... that seems awful large to make fit through a 44 barrel. I'll have to bang awful hard on it. I think I read about heating up the barrel ? my work area is only 65 degrees so the air temp is sorta cool. any chance of getting it stuck? I don't want to mess up a perfectly good barrel.... guess I'm sorta chicken to try something I've never done before... any suggestions?????

Take that egg sinker and lay it sideways on an anvil of some sort and lightly tap it while rotating to reduce the dia. to a bit oversize for the bore.
You dont need to heat up the barrel, but comfy, inside room temp would be nice.
Lube the barrel up good
Tap the sinker into the bore with a SOFT faced object (a plastic mallet or a hardwood board), then drive it deeper with a almost bore dia hardwood dowel (to keep from messing up the bore with a metal rod slipping off the slug and to the side into the rifling)
Once it take the bore it will be easier to drift through
Measure, make a note, then put both into a small RX bottle (or such) for future reference

well that wasn't too bad  ;D I took the egg sinker ran a 4x40 bolt through it and turned it down some in my drill. rammed it in the barrel and them measured it, it came out .424 at the bore and .4295 at the groove . specs show .424 and .431 so I think I'm only off about .0015.... anyway it isn't an overbore and I'm happy with it, guess I'll just make a shorty with it and not make it a .445 ;D... thanks gcrank1 for the tips

Hey, I'm glad the barrel worked out for you!!!!!
If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to serve as a horrible warning.

Larry, It sounds like you are good to go! Well done on developing a methodology to get it.
