Thinking of getting a Mosin Nagant
« on: January 02, 2011, 06:11:45 PM »
I am interested in getting a Mosin Nagant.  I don't want a collector grade gun  I just want something I can shoot.  What is a decent price for one of these guns? Also any other helpful info you can give me would be great. Thanks.

After you get one and shoot it the love for these will start trust me i know.  Then you need to get your C&RFFL03 license for $30 for 3 years to save $$ on everything, even ammo too.  Its a fun hobby more fun than drinking it and pissing it away.  In the morning the guns will still be there when you wake up.

Go for the round receiver,  the hex receiver and the laminated 91/30 mosin too.  Get all three then your golden.

The 91/30 I got is not in great shape. It is forced matched and has some really crappy touch up bluing.  Looks like someone held a spray can a couple of inches away and just sprayed for a few minutes.  Gonna bubba this one, and keep my eyes peeled for a pristine m44 to encase in carbonite and hang on the wall.

Not hard.  Read this post for background info or go to ATF site:

http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,86593.0.html

I've had mine for quite a while, so it's hard to remember the exact procedure.  Believe you need to get fingerprinted and submit cards with your original application to ATF - call your local law enforcement agency - our Sheriff's Office does fingerprinting weekly for $5 or $10, or they may do on a walk-in basis.  You also need to send letter to the chief law enforcement officer in your jurisdiction - just a 'notification,' such as: 'This is to inform you that I am applying for a C&R license with ATF.'

Thanks airsporter. I'll check it out.  I actually located the application on the web and printed it off yesterday. For $30 why wouldn't I get the C&R?

it is very easy to get one. After submission they sent an ATF agent to the house who just went over some rules and regulations and that was it. Just keep your recording book in order and remember it's a  collectors license so you are not  a dealer.

I got mne not long ago. All i dd is download the form fill it out gave one copy to the sherrif and mailed one to ATF. I didnt do any finger prints which i have a high explosives lic.. Dont know if that had anything to do with it, but i didnt read anything that said you had to have them,  30 days later i had my lic.
There are very few probablms that can't be solved with explosives.

Mike, I did not read anything about finger prints either.  Hoping to get the process started in the next month or so.  Got 2 guns in the past month. I don't want to get myself into trouble with my wife :)

TC, there are a lot to choose from out there. Russian 91-30's, 44's and Finnish 39's at the moment. Other's when they show up
If you want a shooter and not spend a lot of money a 91-30 is the way to go. Most shoot at least decent, YMMV. The model 44 carbines have a good bark due to the 20" bbl and usually don't shoot as well. If you want something that can hit as far as you'd try with open sights get the Finn m-39. Probably the best open sights on a military rifle, good trigger, well built by Finn arsenals. Some you've heard of before such as Tikka, Sako and Valmet. They had to shoot a 1.3" group at 100 meters or they were sent back to get fixed! That's a good accuracy standard by any stretch. There's a lot of info out there on them, almost as much as this forum. HTH.
Hold still while I overthink this.

Just saw some at Cabela's for $89.95 about 2 weeks ago. They looked to be in good shape.

I've been debading one for a couple years, but I didn't know what to expect out of one.

They are loads of fun to shoot. GET EAR PROTECTION!!!! Between the boom and the fireball you will like it. Get a spam can of surplus ammo when you get the gun. A couple packs of 20 will be gone before the first range trip is over  ;)

The fist thing i look at is the crown, to see if there is anything that would be suspect in performance. Next is the throat to see if the rifling is all in-tick and nice and squire. than the bore itself, if possible ask to have a perspective rifle swabbed for a better over all look. After all its your 100.00 bucks. I stay away from counter bored nagants, that's just my preference. Things that i look out for is egg shaped crowns, worn out throats with no clear definition and just plain crappy bores. All and all my nagants shot 2.5Mao at 100yards w/ reloads. If you reload slug you barrel.......mosin can be anywhere from 308 to 313. I hope this helps anyone picking out a rifle!
