223 Recipes
« on: January 03, 2011, 06:06:20 AM »
I have browsed through a few pages of posts/replies and can not seem to find what I need, so hear goes.

I have in front of me a box of Sierra 55 gr spitzers for my 223 Ultra Rifle.

I need some ideas on reloading recipes for this bullet.

Currently using 25.5 grains of Varget with a 69 MK's.  I want to come up with a load for a smaller grain bullet.  Powder on hand...Varget, IMR4350 AND H335.

I can’t help you with your powder on hand, but will say I’ve had very good results using 23.0 grains of IMR3031 with any 55 grain pill I’ve tried. Always less then 1 MOA in my Handi Rifle using premium bullets. Inexpensive 55 grain FMJ bullets such as the Priv Partisan are around 1.5 MOA.

First off forget about the 4350 , its way too slow burning for a 55g bullet in a case as small as the 223 , I never had much luck with Varget either , however - 24.5 grains of H335 did well with groups staying in the 3/4" area .

lucky   the only thing i can find the varmint winchester 40rnd white box is in 22-250 near me.  Ive been haven decent luck with remington UMC 55grn MC at $9/20 with the JHP at $13/20, and that is the cheapest I have found so far.  I do have a gander mtn 40 minutes away that I need to hit up sometime.

I've had good luck with H335 and Varget in the past, I did a little research on IMR 8082 XBR last night, it sounds promising if it can be found.

I load Nosler 55gr bullets in front of 25.5gr of Winchester W748.  Gives me just under 3100fps velocity.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' I have yet to see or shoot a 223 that didn't like a load is H322 powder, a match primer and a 52 or 53 grain match bullet from a properly prepped case.

Just yesterday, I got a chance to shoot one of mine a bit. I had two different loads that shot exceptionally well, near 1/2" MOA to be more precise.

I  just checked my Sierra manual. They seem to like Viht  N133. Next in line would be H335 with a charge weight from 23 grains up to 27.5 grains. 27.5 is a MAX. load. I haven't owned a 223 in years. Doesn't seem to do one thing better than my 204 Ruger or my 22-250. :o.  That statement should ruffle a few feathers of the 223 fans. ;D

You statement is completely true. Luckly it doesen't amount to a hill of beans. ;). You could make the same statement about hundreds of different items we use everyday.

For example, if you had a 22LR, a 30/06, a 375 H&H mag and a 12 GA, and you loaded Your own ammunition. What other calibers would you ever really need? OK throw in a 45ACP 1911 as a side arm. ;)

What the 223 does it does efficiently and cost effectively. Its barrel will out live your 204s and do 90% of what your 22-250 will.  All while doing it with at least a 25% savings in powder.

Personally I sold off my bigger 22 CFs and kept the 223. It's a personal choice and I haven't regretted it one bit. The bigger 22 CFs have thief place, personally I feel it's just a smaller notch than most people realize or care to acknowledge. That's fine too cause new and different calibers keep things moving and fresh and that's good for all of us.

Thank you CW for letting me know my statement wasn't worth a hill of beans. We all have opinions and we both have stated ours.

I bought a Handi .22-250 for a 4 to 500 yard fox/coyote riflle.  I just never got there with it.  I bought a new .223, bore sighted it, sighted it in at 35 yards and smacked a pigeon with it at over 300 with junk Russian ammo.  Do I like it?  The .22-250 may well be for sale.  I have the dies and components to handload for the .223, but I haven't done it yet.  Too involved with my pistol calibers and the .38-55 and .45-70.

Pete, You should sell all those worthless guns you have but those last two ;D
I was close to getting a 22-250 Handi here lately but I seem to think most I've heard about them hasn't been that good. Think I'll think on it some more, MAYBE ::)

I thought I'd never own a 223 but have about 5 of them now, unless another is hiding from me again ;D

You say you have Varget and 335, start with some and work your way up till you get what you like.

Tim, you bought them for $13.00 a While back. Someone posted finding them at Meijers for $17-18 the other day. I went to two Meijers here and they are $23 on sale $2 off. I still have one box left from about when you got yours but I don't recall them doing so great for me. Think I'll split them up between these barrels and try them out. Then I'll have 40 more pieces of brass ;D  Same with the 22-250s I have from when they cost about what the 223s did ;) More Brass ::) Probably getting old, time to rotate stock :)

That's still a good price for 40 rounds... especially since they shoot so good. ;)

Hello Richard!!

I do like the H322 for the 223 and its a very good one for the 444Marlin too. I see no reason why it wouldn't be a good choice for the 45 120 too!!!

Tried the White box but was not impressed...However, the cases work real good with IMR3031 and 50 grainers in my 223.....off a rest, 5 inside a nickel at my backyard range....life is tough....wish I could get more than 65 yards to practice on.   I liked the 3031 so much I bought 5 lbs...that aught to last a while with the 223.

Wow, I find myself agreeing with Sourdough on something.  Amazing.

55 gr Nosler BT with Win 748.  I worked up a bit more powder, but had to pull some when high pressure signs showed up when working them up for a Ruger M77 MKII.  Just don't like to have rounds stored that won't shoot in any firearm that I have chambered for that caliber.

I make an exception to that rule with the 44 mag and Lee 310gr RF/GC cast loads, but I mark them "not for 629! - Win 94 only"
