Porcupine hunting
« on: January 05, 2011, 12:57:47 AM »
Porcupine hunting in the winter time is a good way to get out of the house and into the woods, them critters do alot of damage to good timber and hunting camps. In years past I was getting 30-50 a year during the winter and now due to medical conditions I still get out once in awhile and get a few. If you are getting cabin fever get out and give it a try. It also lets you see the woods from a different veiw for your next deer hunting season, trails and escape routes seem to stand out better. Maybe even find sheds that you only saw on the trail camera. Oh and dont forget it's also good exersize.

Ever try eating one?  I did. I watched my father in law skin two one morning. Pretty tricky the way the old boy did it. We had them for dinner that night. He ate them. I didn't care for it myself.

if I knew how to use that photo-shop drawing thingy, I'd show you how I make fishing bobbers out of the quills.

All the time I have in the woods I've only ever seen two porcupines. How do you hunt them, just walk around looking? Or can you call them in somehow.

I track them to thier dens and feeding area's,most are found in rock ledges some in hollow tree's. Its a good way to spend a nice warm winter day. They're a nocturnal animal so alot of nights when its warm they will sleep in the tree they were destroying and you pop em right there.
