Just picked up a Mosin Nagant for $75!

I just got a Mosin Nagant today for $75.  It is pretty decent shape I will throw some pictures up later.  Maybe you knowledgeable folks can tell me about this gun when the picks go up.

So I kinda feel like an idiot on this one but how do I tell what model this is?  I am pretty ignorant on this military surplus stuff. It is my first military gun.

Don't feel bad, I'm in the same boat with many of these surplus arms.  Here is a link that has been very helpful to me in covering the basics without overwhelming me.  http://www.surplusrifle.com/index.asp Look down the tan list on the left side until you see the Mosin rifle.  Two listings up from that one are the Mosin Carbines except that they list them by their moniker instead of as Mosins.

There are scores of models and variations.  Been around since 1891!  Most common on the surplus market today are the 1891/30 rifle, the M44 carbine (has folding bayonet), and the M38 carbine (no bayonet).  Also the Finnish M39's which are highly refined versions of the Mosin Nagant.   Plenty of info online.  Try here:

Check out these web-sites, it looks like you have a 91/30 with some interesting stock markings.

nice rifle, it reminds me of my first one. Brand new still packed in the grease, I bought it from Sears for 10 bucks when they were closing them out after deer season  I think it was 1960 or 61. I sporterized it , cut and crowned the barrel at 24" put a Bishop stock on it, bent the boat to take a scope and shot the heck out it for years, I don't remember what I traded it for but I do remember it kicked like a mule

Check Aim Surplus. Their 91/30's are $70 and $80.

Now you need a Mod 95 Russian Nagant revolver. I have several with holsters and kits for under $100. I use Fed .32mag JHP in mine per a recommendation from one of the distributers. Good luck.
