Need a mild load for 458 Win and 500gr cast
« on: January 05, 2011, 10:00:36 AM »
Can't seem to find any suitable load data for 500 grain cast bullet for 458 Win.  Looking for a mild load in the 1400 to 1600 fps range.  Any ideas?

Thanks.

From the data given in my Accurate manual and my Lyman manual 35 grs Accurate 5744 should get you around 1400 and going up to 42.3 grs 5744 should get you 1600 or a bit more. Going up to 47.0 grs will get you 1900.  I have found the AA 5744 powder to really work well in my 45-70 with cast bullets. It is not position sensitive so it works just the same if the powder is against the primer or up at the bullet. This powder is designed to be used in the large cases with cast bullets.  I use 28 grs 5744 with a 405 gr cast in my 45-70 Sharps for 1400 fps and it is a tack driver.

Excellent.  Thanks.  I will try that one when I go to the shop for more powder.  Any other loads using other powders?  That one is about the only one I do not have on hand!

I have yet to find a cartridge that 5744 burns clean in. It's incredibly filthy in everything I've tried it in. Try 30.0 grs SR4759 under that 500gr lead bullet. It'll get about 1400'ps...at least out of the Mauser Mark X I had. Burns so clean you'll wonder why you are cleaning it afterwards. If yer near San Antonio, I have close to a full pound of 5744 if you'd like to try it. I'll trade for a half pound of most anything for it.

Thanks.  Good thought.  I do have some 4759.  I'll give it a whirl.  Thanks for the offer...  a little out of range for a swap!

Any other useable loads for 500gr?

ive shot a bunch when i had my 458 with 405s and 500s using 2400. 22-25 grains should get you somewhere in the ball park.

5744 might burn a little dirty for smokeless powder but it sure is accurate. I use Fed 215 primers and it burns cleaner. I mostly burn black powder and at long ranges BP is much more accurate than any smokeless.
