a note... there are 20 nuc plants licensing apps on the books in the US.  Several have been approved and if all goes well the plants will be on-line by 2020.

I would much rather see an emphsis on more energy effecient construction, a major emphasis on solar and wind power.  Nuke power just makes too much waste that never goes away.

We'll be reliant on oil for transportation for many, many years.  We don't HAVE to be reliant on oil for power production at all.

NGH

Most of those 20 licensed locations will never be built in the foreseeable future. Following a 30-year period in which few new reactors were built, it is expected that 4-6 new units may come on line by 2018.

The USA has 104 nuclear power reactors in 31 states, operated by 30 different power companies. In 2008, the country generated 4,119 billion kWh net of electricity, 49% of it from coal-fired plants, 22% from gas, 6% from hydro and 23% from Nuclear. Our Nuclear plants are running at 91.1% capacity, meaning we must build more plants. It’s not an issue of under utilization of existing plants.

The fact is our state of using and planning for nuclear plants is abysmal. There are also major changes required to our electrical grid system in order to support the expansion of nuclear power. Obama has done little to address this entire issue. While on one hand he is doing everything to reduce the use of fossil fuel production in this country, he is doing little to compensate for it with alternative sources, including nuclear. It appears the strategy is very simple. Force a reduction in fossil fuel production, so it will drive up the costs of gas, then that will force alternative means. The problem with this strategy is, the consumers and tax payers get caught in the GAP period perhaps for 10 to 20 years with high energy costs which result in wealth transfer overseas for imported oil at inflated prices and fewer jobs.

Are power grid needs a good looking at,  a lot of it in places is 50 years old.  In are area we have lost power more times in the last 6 months than we have in 5 years.  Also they have been talking about closing down one of the local coal plants here, but the system is taxed so much it has been kept open,  one of the turbines is 5 years past it's operational life span.

3.39 here in San Antonio this morning.  I figure it'll hit 3.50 in week or two.  yep, the earthquake/tsunami will probably somehow drive the price up.  Of course some folk will blame it all on the liberals, Jews, Arabs, French, Illuminati, UFO's, aliens, illegal aliens, or whoever.

If anything the price should go down,  from the way it sounds several of the big refineries in Japan are shut down for the time being.  Also had a laugh this evening when I heard a snip it of obama denying accusations that him and the democratic party where preventing drilling on our own soils.

Oil dropped to under $100 per barrel. The earthquake impacts will cause a drop in oil consumption.

$4.05 and still climbing, and Obama still doing nothing.

Saw it has high as $4.20 yesterday.

Obama likely crying in the corner of the oval office. Does not know what to do except tell fat kids not eat fatty foods and school bullies to knock it off.

I think the earthqauke will effect everything we buy for one reason or the other. Oil prices dropped slightly but we have'nt seen the gas price drop but when oil goes up they change gas prices as soon as they hear about it regaurdless of what they paid for the 1000's of gallons they already got in there tanks to sell.

Excellent news in fuel prices. They have been going down! Now regular unleaded only costs twice what it cost during Fall of 2008 (conveniently just before the presidential election.) Funny how the price went up to $4 during summer of 2008, then dropped dramatically for the election season, and then have been creeping up steadily since then.

It's been creeping down here in MN also. 3.39 lately. Was up to about 3.75 for a while. That's still double what I was paying on election day of 2008.

Obama gave Brazil $2billion to develop off-shore drilling in Brazil. What an energy strategy. Take our tax dollars and give it to Brazil so we can buy oil from Brazil. That will be great for jobs in Brazil and hurt us. great work O.

Just as equally bad was the vote to keep the 40 Billion a year in subsidies alive to the oil conglomerates.
They had already stated themselves they didnt need it. So why the vote thumbs up to continue giving
them our tax dollars.

I thought they were suppose to be serious about cutting spending and balancing budgets.

“4 billion tax cut , 40 billion in tax subsidies for oil.  equals another 36 billion added to the debt plus interest.
Great strategy from our leaders in the house as well. Both equally stink!!!

What can you show that the US federal government wrote a check to US Oil companies for $40b? Obama wrote a check (spent US tax payer money) to Brazil for $2B and this was not his first.

We should be serious about reducing spending. But lets not confuse tax cuts with spending.

They just voted on less than 30 days ago  March 1st I believe was the date of the vote. It was also all over Hannity's website.

Here was the exact vote to recommit the 40B  -  Shot down . http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2011/roll153.xml

The oil companies raked in over 1 trillion dollars in Profit last year , not revenue , Profit.
They said they didn't need 40 billion of tax payers monies. Every republican in house
voted to give it to them anyway.

A similar vote end of Feb to recoup $53 billion in taxpayer funds from Big oil was also voted down, largely along party lines. The former CEO of Shell Oil, John Hoffmeister, recently said Big Oil doesn’t need subsidies “in face of sustained high oil prices.”

Scoot, do you mean this:

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-02-10/house-democrats-target-40-billion-in-big-oil-tax-breaks.html

Quote
U.S. House Democrats are seeking to end tax breaks for oil companies such as Exxon Mobil Corp. and BP Plc valued at $40 billion for five years to fund initiatives including clean-energy programs.

Where in the Constitution does it require Oil Companies to pay this $40Billion we're supposedly entitled to? Or are we appealing to some tweaked form of morality that declares anyone that has more than me owes me?

Words have meaning. If they don't, then shut the internet down - its pointless.

Hi TN ,
Here's one quick link , Definitely DEM slant website , (but of course they are all over it to gain political points).

The thing that irked me about this was Big oil saying "we don't need it" thanks anyways. and yet they voted to allow it to continue.  I just scratch my head !!!

Same old class envy bs that the donkey's make a living at.  Get the public all riled up against big oil, while our government refuses to support the idea of using our own resources so we can stop sending trillions to country's that hate our existence.  Liberal/environmental whacko's are making this Country weaker by the day and they are too stupid to see it. :-\
