The wreck of the Revenge discovered
« on: January 07, 2011, 06:09:48 PM »
What is believed to be the wreck of the USS Revenge which sank in 1811 has been discovered off the coast of Rhode Island. The Revenge was commanded by Oliver Hazard Perry who went on to win fame by defeating the British in the 1813 "Battle of Lake Erie." A number of cannons, an anchor, and some canister shot have already been uncovered, but so far nothing (like the ships bell) to make the identification of the ship certain.

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

Lance,
I'm glad you're back, and I hope you stick around for a long time to come (you said you're forty-something, so I'd say around 60 more years will do). ;)

What's kind of impressive about these two guys is that they sat on the discovery for 5 years, making dive after dive trying to turn up an artifact that would prove beyond doubt that the wreck is the Revenge. They finally decided to report it before the 200th anniversary of the loss of the ship passed by. I'm now curious to know if the U.S Navy is going to take over the site, and start raising the artifacts?

That avitar pix, is what i had on hand, and it's a pix my sister took.
It's O.K. with me if you want to put the pix on a calendar. For those that don't know, the pix shows me firing my prototype of the 1870 Krupp breechloading Ballonabwehrkanone-anti-balloon gun, and of course i'm shooting at a "balloon"...........my prototype is big and ugly, and might not be worthy of being in a calendar, but dog gone it shoots great!

I'd be real surprised if they didn't.
But the first thing that will probably happen is to put it off limits, (for several reasons) even to the guys who found her.

My guess is the USN will declare it off limits and then not do anything because of budgetary limitations.  They usually do these things as training operations so an already approved project provides the financing, so it will have to wait for the next available one.
