Michigan Sikhs Want Religious Swords in School

Sikhs say the relgious sabre called a Kirpan are not weapons at all.

Members of a Michigan Sikh community are upset after a student was banned from bringing a religious sword to a public school.
The incident occurred at Bentley Elementary School in Canton when a fourth grader was caught wearing a small saber underneath his clothing, reports MyFoxDetriot.
The sabre, called a Kirpan, symbolizes Sikhs' efforts to ward off evils and followers say it poses no danger to the community. Any person who has been baptized into the faith -- the world’s fifth largest religion -- is expected to carry the saber all the time.
“It’s a religious symbol,” Sikh leader Teikiran Singh told WJBK-TV, disputing the notion that it was a weapon.
“It just reminds you of your spirituality. It’s a fight against your internal evils.”
The saber was discovered after an unidentified Sikh student and another student were reportedly roughhousing on the playground. The principal initially allowed the child to keep the sword but the Plymouth-Canton School District later determined the religious symbol resembled a weapon and was officially banned.

Parents, many of whom did not want to be identified, agreed with the ban.
“It should stay home, in my opinion,” one parent told the Detroit Fox affiliate.
Another said, “If it’s somebody’s religion, I would wonder if there’s a reason or purpose for them to have to have it at school.”
But Singh stressed that no one is in danger. “Equal damage could be done with a fork or with a butter knife,” he said.
“Every kid has a pair of scissors, a pencil.” Sikh leaders are hoping to meet with school officials and work out a compromise that will allow their children to practice their faith.

Hi All

I am definitely no expert on the Sikh religion

But if I remember correctly the sword that they carry is a small un-sharpened one.

It is simply a religious symbol.  Many of you wear a cross around your neck to show your religion.  It is a symbol of your faith just like the sword is a symbol of the Sikh's.

If crosses are ok then the miniature sword should be as well, as long as it can cause no harm to anyone.

If we truly believe in freedom of religion.

Just an opinion

I served with some of the last Sikhs in the Army, back in the 80's. All the Sikhs in US forces served voluntarily, and were trained from birth to think martially, so they all wound up in SF. They were allowed to keep their turbans (Green with their SF patch), beards, and carry their ceremonial sword with them, although the ones they carried in uniform were sharpened, and weapons. They were grandfathered out, and no religious exemptions for persons in military have been given since, although since 9/11 many Sikhs have tried to come back in. There is a huge American Sikh population, stemming from a wave of immigration in the 50's. Today one of the nations largest private security firms is a wholly owned and operated Sikh company, and they are proud Americans too. Sikhs have served in the British forces, often with Commandos, for several hundred years. They are a warrior caste/religion, and have bravely fought for the British Crown, and for America. I would proudly serve alongside them again, and hope to stay out of their way - they're good at what they do.

The school in question has bit off more than they probably realized initially. Whichever way this goes sets a legal precedent. Personally I miss the old days where every young man had a pocket knife, and some of the young ladies did too. And maybe rifles/shotguns in the car in the parking lot, especially during hunting season. My son & daughter have had a knife on them since they were old enough, and my son has a rifle hanging on the wall over his drafting table ... we home school for this and many other reasons.

As long as this is not a Judeo / Christian religion then yes I believe they need to be allowed. We should not show ANY intolerance to those who do not practice the Judeo / Christian faith and or principles.

The rest of the world is far more enlightened than we here in America are. It was by pure dumb luck that the citizens of this country stumbled into world domination in a mere 170 years. The sooner we can adopt the cultures of the third world the sooner we can all be equal.

I am reminded of a conversation my cousin had with his neighbor concerning his lawn. He had asked the fellow what he should do to match the high quality of his turf. After getting the advice, Will told him that if it didn't work he would just tear the neighbors lawn up to match his own yard.

BS  BS  BS!!!!! How many kids have been kicked out because they had a Boy Scout knife in their lunch box, or the trunk of their car. Or, they drew a picture of their older brother that was in the military and was holding a gun.
Freedom of religion my A**. Kick the little bast**d out just like they do everyone else.
If this kid can carry a sword, unsharpened or not, Boy Scout knives should be allowed, pocket knives, and pictures of military personell with guns in their hands should be. gypsyman

As mentioned before that some folks wear a Cross or Star of David to show their religious affiliation, would it be too much that the Sikh wore a miniature sword(s) on a chain around their neck?  Pretty sure if a christian or jewor muslim  showed up at a school with their symbol atop a 6' staff that it would create "interest" from the board.
