IMHO, I think heavy cast bullets would work great especially for subsonic loads. I know when developing subsonic, cat's sneeze loads, you sure don't wanna stick a jacketed bullet in the barrel. ;)

I could go for one.  Regular 20 or 22" barrel.  Doesn't have to be threaded, but wouldn't turn one down that was.

Being that I live in MO, and suppressors require a stamp and user submission to 24/7 household insepction, I am not interested in this rifle from a suppression standpoint.

I am very interested in using this barrel as the basis for a well built survival rifle. 16" Standard contour bbl would be a must, It's already threaded to accept a muzzle device, (in my case a flash hider).  Throw on some decent iron sights and tap it to accept a scope base, and top it off w/ the survival stock.  That's how a survival rifle should be set up IMHO.  I think it would really fill a niche that the NEF forum users would like to see which is a non bull bbl survival rifle that doesn't wiegh 8 lbs.

While I love the idea of this and most any new chambering. I just see too many potential problems with this case in a handi action. I'll save my money this time. Not to mention the exceptional accuracy shooters are getting from there 7.62x39 barrels. Bullet selection in .311 may be less, but 85-180's are out there and that suits my needs. Personally, my lil Trotter specail 32-20 will likely do 80% of what this caliber does.

I do like the idea of using a 357 Maxi case tho!!!

I would be interested in one, and go ahead and thread that barrel. I have always wanted to try a silencer.

If H&R offered threaded barrels straight from the factory, they'd sell a bunch of them in all kinds of cartridges.

Yes! Yes! Yes!  I just bought a Handi-Rifle yesterday with the express intent of having the barrel stubbed, threaded and chambered for a cartridge well suited for a supressor.  If big green decided to make it a factory option it would be even better and I wouldn't have to cut up a perfectly good barrel.  I found these forums a few weeks ago and seeing this post finally made me join up just so I could express my support for this project.  Go rsilvers and go Big Green !!!!!!!!
If it has a barrel and shoots bullets I am interested in it and if I don't have one I want one.  Never met a gun I didn't like.

pretty niffty little round,  I bet it would make one hell of a yote round, and would prolly pick one up, right after the 45-70.

It appears that many may not be casting a vote in the poll at the top of the page, there are 676 views, but only 26 votes so far.  ???  IIRC correctly, H&R needs an order for at least 250 rifles of standard chamberings, 500 for a special order item, I don't know if the fast twist would qualify it for being non-standard tho.

It has a longer throat which allows more velocity for any given pressure, so compared to 300 Whisper(R) it is like comparing 5.56mm to 223. Also it was submitted to SAAMI as a royalty-free open standard that anyone is free to use without a license or permission.

I guess I'm gonna be the Nay Sayer.  I don't see the point.  I have Handis in 7.62x39, .30-30., .30-06, .357 Maximum, 38-55, 445 supermag., etc.etc.  I can load all of them up or down to do the same thing.  On the subject, my 7.62x39 Handi is one of my most accurate and reliable Handis I own.  I'm very fortunate to have found it.  On top of it, it has very nice wood.

Wow you have a lot of these.

For some reason I never ended up with a 30-30 anything. I have some lever actions - 357 Magnum, 44 Magnum, and 45-70. I guess there was no point in me getting the 357 magnum lever action and that one should have been a 30-30.

My general question is - what do people see in a Handi Rifle over a lever action?

I own lever guns too.  The Handi just works for us old timers.  We don't shoot until we're sure of the shot, and the single works fine.  If you have a .44 mag lever, you can't make it shoot .445s.  The same goes for the .357 to a Maximum.  There are a lot of reasons, but I believe the bottom line is self confidence.  We are serious in our rifles.  We just don't let them sit in a closet for a year and hunt deer with them.  We shoot them and know them.  I'd guess that's the best part.  So many "deer hunters" buy a box of bullets every 15 years.  They don't have a clue where it can possibly shoot.  We Handiholics are continuously seeking advice from one another.  Loads, best caliber for what, etc.  And we load and shoot regularly.

It is true that when I shoot the lever action I don't make use of it being a repeater. And also my bolt actions I always single feed them.

Why a 445 SuperMagnum when one has 45-70?

Why 357 Max at all?

Why do people like the .312 caliber - it seems the main use is to get 6 shots into a 5 shot cylinder.

They're two very different calibers.  The .445 will never do the distance the .45-70 will do, but it works well to over a hundred yards with a lot less recoil on a light stock such as the BC Carbine.
The .357 Max is the most used and versatile rifle I own.  I whistle, and it jumps in the truck.  In my opinion, it is one rifle not to be without.

I hope that H&R  get a 300 BLK in the line up  -- it is the 22 hornet of the 30 cal   --- and I hope could clean up for a 30 Herrett ,,   for those that like  a good rimmed case -- along with making a rimmed out of 357 max..I see a lot of positive   ... in both copper and cast--   a good case for low report light loads...  to 30-30 power.. reform from 223 brass...

But how much chance is there that it  makes it  into the lineup at H&R?

rsilvers,
fortunately you own a 45-70... ;D
I shoot subsonic 45-70, what a hoot.

I like the idea of what you have done with the 300. I too am of the mind about a rimmed version for single shots. I am just paranoid about rimless cases in them. (yep it is probably irrational)

If you don't own a handi you should by a few and join the addiction.

I have lots of 30 caliber bullets from 110 to 210 grains.
