Whats the best new 45acp ammo?
« on: January 09, 2011, 01:30:31 PM »
Ok whats the best, most accurate, brand new over the counter ammo we can purchase?  I would like to test some 1911's for accuracy and its got to be a fair test.  Would using ball ammo be accurate?  Who offers the most constant, most accurate ammo?  Or do you use a few different brands to see how accurate they are?   Or do i need to reload the better ammo for target shooting the 1911?   CZY

BTW;  I just want to get away from the russian wolf ammo to see if the accuracy gets better, plus i'm not testing the functioning now, i'm after the accuracy. I would like to check my norinco very closely before i do any frame/slide rework on it.  I need to set a base line for accuracy to go by to compare it before and after the work. Then i can tell how much better it got after swaging,  lapping in the slide/frame rails.

1911:  the most consistent and accurate loadings for the 45 acp are jacketed semi-wadcutter target loads.  I think Winchester still makes them or you can roll your own with a 185 gn jacketed slug and 5 gns of Unique for 672'/sec - this load comes from my old Lyman manual.

Ball ammo is not loaded for accuracy.  The mil-spec load for the 230 gn slug is about 250'/sec faster than the target load for the same slug.  The target load for the 230 gn jacketed slug is 3.5 gns of Bullseye for about 622'/sec.

If I wanted to know just how accurate or inaccurate my 45 is/was, I would use some known factors like target loadings to give me some sort of a baseline and then go from there.  Good luck and let us know.

The gunsmith who accurizes my bullseye guns and certifies them to shoot under 2 inches at 50 yards bases his certification on Federal Premium Gold Medal Match 185 grain SWC

Also see this Gun Tests Report

Note that althought the report mentions Bullseye shooters and 50 yard accruacy, the tests were autually done at 25 yards.  The tested guns were factory models, were not accurized, and would not shoot under 2 inches at 50 yards.

Mikey/guys;  I do have some 185gr semi wad cutters that i reloaded back in 77/78.  I shot some of them and they all went bang.  I have plenty left for mt tests now and in the future.  I think i'm also going to get some new ammo too.  Then i can compare my reloads against the new ammo for accuracy too.
I need the before fior a baseline for the after the work is done. Then i can compare it all.  I been wondering about me getting 1 / 3 shot cloverleaf per mag and why its happening because i maybe getting 3rds that equally loaded and the rest maybe flyers because of the not so perfect ammo. I can't see my barrel fit with its 100% lock up being any better of a fit. It has to be between the ammo and the frame looseness why its not shooting tighter groups.  CZY
