I just traded up a nice 444p with a set of ghost ring sights,120 peices of brass, 2 boxes of 240gr.xtp's & a set of dies.I've been wanting one of these for a while,finally got lucky.Deer season is out so i guess I'll give it a try on coyotes.I want to get a mold for it 240-300gr.range any thoughts as to what kind would be very helpfull. Thanks

You need to go to www.marlinowners.com and read the section on the 444. I have some of Ranch Dogs's design for the 265 GC comeing to test out, have only used Hornady 265's so far. There is a thread on bullet performance for the 444 that is a must read. Congrats on the 444P, I really like the dickens out of mine! DP

I'm adding a 444P to my 1965 444 this week. Looking foreward to developing loads for a micro-groove and a ballard.

My 444P has Ghost ring sights on it also. Mine are XS sights and I think that they are great. What brand are on yours?

Two suggestions, first, the Lee 310 gr GC is a very good inexpensive mold, second, the Lyman 429421 is an excellent bullet, it is a keith design that runs 245 gr #2, linotype runs 238 gr. It is a flat base, semi-wadcutter design. Have taken many deer with both.

Gotta love a 444P. I'm still loading 240gr JSP and 265gr JSP. I'll be watching this thread to see what everyone likes for cast.

the problem with them is you need a bullet with a short nose. My favorite is the ballistic cast 340lfngc but ballistic cast is out of bussiness right now and i doubt your going to find that mold. Ive got a couple other favorites but there both custom molds with two crimp groves so they can be seated deap enough. You basicaly have two choises. Either you contact veral smith and have him make you a mold and if you do id recomend something in the 300-320 grain range that has a short enough nose or ou crimp on the nose of the bullet. Ive also had good luck with the lyman 320swcgc crimping it over the driving band. It looks odd but shoots well. Hornady brass for that extended range plastic tipped crap is a bit shorter and will work with more bullets or i guess a guy could trim his brass short enough to work with about anything.

This is what I do. It works well with the 300gr. Ranch Dog. At 2136 fps nothing else compares. I don't even bother trying other bullets any more. I tried everything I could find, including handgun slugs and this is what works for me.

Allow me to answer that for him. That is an Outfitter, 444 Marlin, straight from the factory with a ported 18 1/2 inch barrel, straight grip, Ballard rifleing.

If you will look at the Marlins he owns, you will see he kinda likes them short ported barrels.

The porting really does keep the muzzle rise in check on these sweet rifles, but they are louder for anyone standing around you when you touch em off.

I don't notice any more noise when I shoot mine, but my kids sure get back when I'm ready to shoot.

223fan: I have three Winchester 94AE Big Bores in 444, and all came with Marlin barrels. One is sporterized with a longer custom barrerl; one wears a standard 20" Marlin microgroove barrel, same as you find on any 20" Marlin 444, with a 1:38 microgroove twist; and the Timber Carbine wears the 18" ported barrel, the same as the 444P. The shorter barrel wears either a 1:12 or 1:20 twist, haven't yet figured out which, but neither would shoot cast loadings until I went to Veral Smith's forum and read about bore-lapping/fire-lapping barrels, and then went to the BearTooth Bullets web-site, where the owner who is a contemporary of Veral Smith, has developed load data for the 444 and cast bullets of more configurations than you can shake a stick at, with incredible results.

It does not seem to matter if it is a jacketed slug or a cast or cast-gaschecked slug of standard swc or LBT design, with the Beartooth/Veral Smith bore-lapping process and the cast bullet loadings you can shoot (heavy) cast loadings more accurately and at better velocities than most jacketed. When I want to play with either of my 444s I will usually throw together a bunch of rounds using cast slugs and low charges of pistol powders and although they are loaded down 444s, they out power 44 mags with the same weight bullet out to farther distances. It is a hoot, and you really ought to get there. jmtcw.

i had a early marlin 444 and it was just to heavy for me and the kind of hunting i wanted it for, so when winchester came out with the timber carbine i got one and mounted a 1x4 leupold on it. eastbank.

Eather of the bullet ranges would be fine, mine shoots the 310 better. You might want to go with the 300 gr. for coyotes.

Tried to log into Marlin owners but keep geting some other sight.

Sorry for such a long delay. My 444P along with all my other Marlin levers have Bushnell 1.5 X 4.5 Banners. I mounted em all on Weaver medium height quad locks.

My favorite load for the 444P is the Hornady 265gr JFP Interlock over H4198.
