New Encore!
« on: January 10, 2011, 02:15:02 PM »
I finally put together my Encore for "Primitive Weapon" season here in Mississippi. It's a pretty good shooter too! Got to bloody it up soon! Took it this afternoon but only had a small doe come out. Will go again tomorrow afternoon and hopefully shoot a meat deer with it!

What qualifies for a primitive weapon in Mississippi?

"Primitive firearms" for the purpose of hunting deer, are defined as single or double barreled muzzle-loading rifles of at least .38 caliber; single shot, breech loading, cartridge rifles (.35 caliber or larger) and replicas, reproductions or reintroductions of those type rifles; and single or double-barreled muzzle-loading, shotguns with single ball or slug. All muzzle-loading Primitive Firearms must use black powder or a black powder substitute with either percussion caps or #209 shotgun primers or flintlock ignition. Breech loading single shot rifles must have exposed hammers and use metallic cartridges.  Cartridges may be loaded either with black powder or modern smokeless powder. Scopes of any magnification are allowed on primitive weapons.

Why they don't just let us use regular rifles year round, I don't know! I don't deer hunt that much anymore so I used it as an excuse to get a new rifle!

So do you have a front stuffer barrel (muzzle loader) or are you using a center fire

I had to reread the regs a few times, at first I thought you had to use only a muzzle loader  barrel. Thats what we have to do in Utah

Black Betty has been killed with!

Shot a doe this afternoon (1 of 19 I saw today!). We need to do some serious doe thinning at my farm. Saw 19 deer this afternoon and all appeared to be antlerless (may have been a button head or two but no obvious racked bucks).

Shot her about 30 yards, she did not move a muscle when she got hit.

Nice job, did you use factory ammo or hand loads?

Good shootin!
It is funny how locations differ.
In AZ we seldom ever make a shot less than 100 yards.

Thanks! Those were Hornady Superformance 200gr I used. We will work up some loads for her this summer.

I had 19 deer with the furthest being about 1,000yds to this one that came out at under 30yds yesterday afternoon. I use my .280 for the longer range stuff! I want to shoot this one a little more at long distance before I stretch it out too much!

Here is a picture from the stand I was in yesterday afternoon. As you can see, the shot could of been a lot longer  ;D

You call that gun primitive? I'd hate to see a modern gun :)

No, I do not. The State of Mississippi does though! I don't see anything primitive about it, but then again, I don't make laws.
