45 information
« on: January 10, 2011, 04:55:54 PM »
Today I was at one of my favorite gun shops and I found two lower priced 45's that I liked. The first was a Rock Island Armory 1911 A-1. This one had the amidextrious safties, beaver tail, and what appeared to be Novak rear sights. The second was a stainless steel mil-spec 1911 A-1 made by Metro Arms. Both are made in the Phillippines and that is about as much as I know. I like the way they both felt in my hand, althouhg I liked the Rock Island Armory a little better due to the amidextrious safety as I am left handed. I also thought the trigger was a little better than the Metro Arms. So now I'm wondering if anyone here can give me the pros and cons on either firearm. I just looking for a moderate priced 45 as I will mainly use it for plinking. I'm not worried about concealed carry because that is what my Smith & Wesson Nightguard 396 44 Special is for. So any information will be greatly appreciated.

I have read many good things about the Rock Islands from guys on this forum. Since I have no experience with it myself, I will post here to kick it back up to the top and maybe one of those guys will see it and chime in.
You can also search the forum for their comments.
Sounds like if you have narrowed it down to those two, the one with the ambi. safety would be the way to go since you are a lefty.

Good luck!

I've heard good things about the rock iland armory 1911's so far but i don't own one yet.  I like there 1911a1 in 45acp in nickel finish.  They seem to be very affordable too.  On the other hand i been eyeing the springfield armory 1911's and they offer a forged frame and slide on all there 1911's.  They seem a step up from the rock iland armory 1911's too. But if your a lefty and RIA has what you need and your looking for thats the way i'd go for now.  But i wonder with the low cost of the springfield armory mil-spec and adding on the amberdexterious safety lever couldn't add on that much more. I just get exceited when i read the frame/slide are forged. But for an entry level 1911 the RIA is hard to beat.  Sorry i went in a circle on this. I like them all anyway.                                  CZY

I have a couple of RIA's:  A 3.5" compact and a full-size Tactical, which sounds like what you're looking at.  Love them.  I had some issues with the Compact early on and shipped it back to their service facility in Nevada.  I had it back in less than 2 weeks, after getting a personal phone call from their gunsmith who explained what he was doing to fix the problem.  It has not had a hiccup since, with any kind of ammo.  The full-size had an early issue with the supplied magazine.  I bent the lip out a bit, and it hasn't had a problem since. It has been flawless with my Wilson and McCormick magazines.  I consider both pistols totally reliable and they shoot closer than I can hold.  And who can find fault with such outstanding customer service?  I say you can't go wrong with an RIA, especially for the price and the use you (and I) plan to put it to. ;D

I had a Springfield Mil Spec and it was a good gun, a friend wanted it bad enough he traded me out of it.  I have the RIA in 1911 38 Super and it is a fine handgun that I won't be trading to anyone. 8)  Mine likes the Meg-Gar magazines.

This thought gets a little ahead of the post---end results kinda thing.
I---just me---am always going into a purchase looking for the end results I will achieve.
For that reason and--that reason alone--I like Forged over Cast.
CAST are good--or can be--just a  Forged can be second quality.
I like a good base for what I know I will eventually have done to it.
Colts are good, basic and a great build platform.
Blessings

William;  I been browsing thru the springfield armory 1911's and found out all there 1911's have forged frames and slides.  Right now with wanting a better quality 1911 thats a big plus to me.  Even the springfield armory G.I.45 which i think is there lowest priced 1911 is also a forged frame/slide too.   This may make a great platfrom for a build too. I own both cast and forged 1911's.  Bill

My Springfield armory,  "Made in Brazil",  that i have has a G.I. Mil-spec with the key start as i call it(safety) in park finish.  Its listed on the SA site as having a forged frame /slide too.
