Arizona Shooting = Gun control lobbyist hayday
« on: January 11, 2011, 03:41:20 AM »
With two shooting happening over the weekend and one including a government official I fear we may have another battle on our hands.  Rather than recognizing that insane people and extremist sometimes do own guns the leftist will begin a whole new round of gun control talks.  I am curious what you guys think might happen.  It seems like whenever something like this happens, the leftist gun control people come out of the wood work.

I think we'll see it.  Just fight hard.  They don't control the House right now and as polarizing as the gun issue is, I don't see them making any serious steps towards it unless they get control (house and senate) in 2012.  By that time the controversy may have died down.

Watched the news last night, and a Rep. from N.J., that had a husband killed back in the early '90's, said she was going to propose the magazine ban again. I really feel sorry for her, and all that were involved in this latest shooting, but she has a feel good do nothing attitude about this stuff. If this latest nut case had used a car bomb like so many terrorists in foreign country's, people killed would have been far greater.
On the other hand, it was reported that this administration doesn't like to go into the gun control debate right now, as they know how it has hurt them in past elections. We'll see something I presume. gypsyman

I just think it would be nice if the reporting would be more accurate.  About all we heard at first was that the shooter used an "automatic" weapon.  And these types of weapons with their high capacity magazines are only made for killing people.  I guess I've been misusing all of my "automatic" weapons for years, because I haven't killed anyone, or anything.

If nothing else it will probably start another run on gun sales, especially high cap stuff. Once again I am not too concerned at this time that much is going to happen in the way of gun control. It is just to hot of a political football at this time. I am still surprised that the lack of security at her function, especially with previous threats being made.

Let's see - .45 ACP
               .38 ACP
               .380 ACP
               .32 ACP
               .25ACP

ACP = AUTOMATIC Colt Pistol

And from the board that accepted the brainchild of St. John
Quote
“…The Board therefore recommendsthat the Colt Caliber .45 Automatic Pistol of the design submitted to the Board for test be adopted for use by foot and mounted troops in the Military service in consequence of its marked superiority to the present service revolvers and to any other known pistol, of its extreme reliability and endurance and of its fulfillment of all essential military requirements…”

Like it or not, AUTOMATIC Loading Pistols have been called "automatics" since their inception.  If we are going to bash the media for being idiots and not knowing what they are talking about, we need to know what we are talking about.

Guzzi,
That's what makes me so mad about this stuff.  The politicians won't say a word to get in office and then will drop the hammer once they are past election time and sight the Arizona shooting as a reason.  They way people talk though I should have killed a whole bunch of people.  I have quite the arsenal in my house.

Everybody calls them automatics, except a few fussy people that nobody pays attention to and people who need to draw fine distinctions for some academic purpose.

YOu are correct Slim.  The city of Rochester, NY is overrun with gangs right now.  They all have guns.  Do we really think that legislation is going to make these gang bangers put their guns down? I don't think so.

Colt called their 1911 an automatic for years , really untill it becamd fashonable to not do so. In todays world old timmers do so out of habit . The distinction between simi auto and full auto is in fact a fine and jail time or both in many places others it paper work and money. I would suggest all pay attention .

Gun control ? Well Regan said it best we are not a sick nation it was one sick person who shot him. We all should repete this at any opening to do so .

The shooter would have probably done less damage if the pistol had been a full auto due to lack of control.

On the gun control issue. We knew this was going to happen sometime during the Obama first administration. It was just a matter of time. Interesting timing, though, that it should be at the very beginning of the second half of the first term, just when congress is getting back in session and Obama has a new chief of staff.

About the full auto reporting. That always happens in these cases, and I have even seen semi autos deliberately portrayed by the major networks as machine guns, using footage falsely representing the type of weapon used, and showing machine gun bursts when none happened at the crime scene.

In some sense, it might be best to admit that the gun was a full auto, which would beg the question of where it came from since no such guns are available except through criminal channels and through tightly regulated transfers between legitimate buyers and sellers.

it is going to be interesting to see what motivated this guy.
Smoldering hatred I will bet. As fed up with the government as most
of the rest of the country is! I have a feeling this is just the beginning
of actions such as this. I think I will stay away from any political rallies
or politicians just in case the next time it is a car bomb.
Folks are tired of this economy, they are tired of illegals, they are tired of big government
getting into all aspects of their lives. They are especially tired
of the gov taking their hard earned money. There are so many people out there
right now that really have nothing else to loose by committing acts
such as this! They just want to make who they think is responsible pay!

One report said the mag held 31 rounds , 19 people were hit one would assume some maybe more than once . Not sure at that range it would have mattered . The fact that when he did a mag change it gave people time to grab the new mag. One report said a spring broke on the G-19 . Who knows but the mag thing might help pass a new hi-cap mag ban .

Were there not any police at this event? I would think by the time this guy took that many shots somebody would have taken him out.  I just have a hard time seeing how someone can get of 31 shots without a law enforcement officer reacting.  I would assume there must have been a large showing of law enforcement with a congresswoman and a federal judge at this event.

^^This.

If you notice the high cap glock mags are out of stock on many websites right now.  I looked for them over lunch to see if they were still around.  I suspect the more they talk about gun control the more we're going to see prices go up because of a new round of panic buying.

I have to admit that I'm surprised that there wasn't any security there for her, but with the responsibilities of that job you should be out talking with people regardless.

I don't think Obama will try to get gun control through now if he thinks he's going to get a second term.

Last night I stopped by walmart to see their ammo shelves and see with my own eyes how they were looking.  To my surprise they were completely stocked.  I bought a couple bricks of 22lr and didn't make a dent in the supply.  I don't think the new wave of panic buying has set in just yet, but I think it's coming soon.

Makes a case for people to carry. But he could unload his weapon in seconds . The lady who grabbed the new mag. was one brave lady . She was good under pressure.
I would bet there will be security in the future .

I wonder why there wasn't someone there carrying concealed. It may
be that , due to her political affiliation, a person inclined to carry didn't
want to hear anything she had to say. It wonder too where the police
were.

Wouldn't have mattered if there were people carrying or not.  Only in Hollywood are people able to recognize that there is a threat, find it, clear leather, and put ten rounds in the thugs ear in less than .001 seconds.  When Pres Reagan was shot the thug got of 6 shots from a POS, rough as a cob revolver in three seconds.  All almost within arms length of USSS and some uniforms.

A short while back I heard Nancy Grace, on her show, make the statement that a semi-auto could be fired multiple times by just holding down the trigger and that no one other than law enforcement should have the right to own one. No body really corrected her though one lady made a stumbling effort to try but Nancy still couldn't comprehend the diferance between semi-auto and full auto. Mainly because she didn't want too! Such misconceptions run rampant! Carrying on government property is a no no unless you are a licensed polition or some form of law enforcement. Some form of security should have been present but many polititions want to apear like they don't need it.
