Never owned a Handi: What's the big deal?
« on: January 11, 2011, 04:57:11 AM »
Hey there,
I see the Handi people are pretty darn loyal.  I have never owned or shot one.  What is the fuss about? I want to know why I should add one to my collection.  I have single shots guns both from TC and CVA.  Is there a benefit to get a Handi when I have these?

tcencore,

If you are happy and having fun with your TCs, by all means, stick with them.

What beings most people to the Handi first is the price , plain & simple , thats were it gets kinda strange , once they shoot one , they soon relize that its a great rifle for what they paid .

Add to the mix that you can add different barrels and stock combo's and you have a very field ready platform that will work well for paper , varmints , deer and even some of the more nasty game out there .

Sure they have their quirks , and maybe thets part of what makes them just a fun gun to shoot .  ;)

Stimpy,
I agree the price has me curious. While I love my Encore, I don't love the price of barrels.  I can go buy guns for what I have to pay for a barrel.
Question for you. Are the barrels easily interchanged on the frame?

TC06,

Look at the FAQ sticky thread at the top of this forum page.  Use cntl "f" and search for barrel fitting and it is there.  Also, all things regarding the care and feeding of a Handi are in the FAQs, plus if you find the info by yourself in the FAQs it will keep you on Quick's good side. ;D

At one time I thought that the H&Rs were a bit picky about barrel fit , when everyone said just get a TC and they all fit each other .

Not true , I was at a friends one day , big time TC Contender guy and I asked him why all the different frames , his anwser was that even though TC says that all barrels will fit , THEY DON'T , so he had to keep buying frames to fit new barrels that he had gotten .

I have more than a few frames , so the odds that I have one that a barrel will fit are better than most . but in some case's , a bit of tweeking is required .

the thing that got me into handi rifles was of course the cost. I bought a really nice (to me) 7mm mag (winchester bolt-gun) a few years back. It shot fairly well, but had to have two trips to the local gunsmith to make it shoot really well. By the time I bought the gun, equipped it with a good scope, and made the above mentioned trips to the gunsmith, I had around $1500 tied up in the rifle. I carried it for one season and while I never banged it up I was at times more worried about banging up the gun than I was worried about hunting. Sure, it wasn't a $5000, one of a kind rifle, but to me the money tied up in the gun is substantial.

So, one day at a local gun shop I saw a handi rifle on the rack that was chambered in 270. $400 later I had the rifle and a pretty decent bushnell scope on top of it. It didn't shoot sub MOA groups off the rack, but neither did the above mentioned 7mm mag. The 7mm mag had to go see a gunsmith to shoot sub MOA. Well, to be fair, it didn't have to go to the gunsmith, I just didn't feel confident doing the work myself, so I chose to take it to the gunsmith. The 270 however did shoot well enough to drop every deer it has been fired at. I later bought a second handi rifle in 30-06 that has a kill for every round that has been fired through it (in hunting situations) as well. The 30-06 didn't shoot sub MOA out of the box either, but still shot well enough to drop its targets.

Now, a few years into having these two rifles I stumbled across this site, and starting with the 30-06 I went through an accurizing process using information found in the FAQ's, and the 30-06 is now shooting MOA (as of this morning...thanks to a snow day and not having to teach 8th graders!). The 30-06 has had a trigger job by me using the information in the FAQ for a grand total of about 50 cents, I floated the forend for about $3 worth of dremmel sanding pieces and an O-ring, and a little bit of bedding work that required about $10 worth of materials. So, for under $15 above the cost of the rifle, and a few hours of time (I'm slow), I have a 30-06 that shoots 99% (and I'll say i'm the 1% error) as well as my 7mm mag that was over 3 times as expensive.

I'm beginning the same process on the 270 now and expect it will get similar results. It may even shoot a little better than the 30-06 being my second run through on accurizing a handi rifle.

Now I just need pay day to get here so I can get a handi rifle coming that is chambered in 35 whelen. That will more than cover the biggest critters I will ever get to hunt in my lifetime. I may in time pick up a 4th handi in a smaller caliber in case I ever get to do any varmint popping, but I haven't done any thus far in my life and don't foresee any in the near future.

The barrel accessory program has great pricing, but I probably won't ever take advantage of the pricing because I don't think it would work out well swapping barrels after the bedding work, etc. I should probably check with other members here on that, but in my head it seems as if it would be problematic. However, when the whole gun is $250, I don't feel too bad about buying them complete for each caliber.

That's about all I can offer for why i'm hooked on the handis.

I either buy complete Handis or fit them to the spare frames I have available.  I don't change barrels, each is on their own dedicated, untweaked frame and stock set.  I have filed a latch shelf or added an "O" ring, but that's it.  Everything on my signature line below shoots MOA or sub MOA.  I've found that the ammo used was the greatest accuracy factor.  I had a factory trigger job done on one frame when I ordered accessory barrels, but I do well with a heavy trigger pull.  Most of my hunting is done in mid-winter, wearing heavy gloves, and I don't like to poke a glove through the trigger guard on a hair trigger.  I think Handis give you the most bang for the buck.  If I didn't. I wouln't own so many.  If I can sneak them past Patty, I want two more barrels.....444 and .500.

Buy one. Play with it. Very shortly you will either understand, or explanations will not help. They are like having always bought cakes at the bakery and then suddenly discovering that 89 cents on sale for a Betty Crocker cake mix and 45 minutes wait will give you a really good cake, not as fancy, or as perfectly decorated, but darned good. And then learning that you can have one any time...in dozens of flavors....without leaving home......       Which may be followed by the local culinary elites looking in disdain while daintily picking at their $50 creation, while you wolf down half a batch of brownies @ $1.39. After that, nature just kind of takes its course.

No big deal, that's a big part of it.

Functional?  Versatile?  Relatively inexpensive?  Yep.  But those things plus the fact that they are just cool to fool around with, often in multiples, is a large part of it too.

What's cool? When at the range the guy next to you with the $2000   rifle that will not group any better than the cheap ole handi. That look is worth the price of admission! Trust me, I have over twenty Mauser sporters of various calibers. I find I'm using the Handis more than anything else. I shoot a lot of cast boolits thru mine and they are perfect for that.

They're great guns plain and simple. There's a few quirks here and there but that's part of the fun... you can get your hands dirty and work on them, you can change parts and customize them to suit your needs. Odds are a guy with a Merkel ain't gonna want to mess with things but a guy with a Handi looks forward to it. It's all part of being a Handiholic. ;D

a cheap gun that can handle very nasty handloads, is also lite and simple mechanically.  it's not a status gun, it's a tool.  go thump a deer with a 45-70 (grown-man loads) and see how you feel about handis.

Buy a 30-30 or 357 Mag Handi and if you don't like it, then part it out on the H&R classifieds and get your money back.

Here is a question.  Most of you agree that barrel swapping isn't  recommended.  How about with a gun that sells new with two different barrels?

Well Pops gave me 45-70 handi a few years ago and I have been very pleased with it. After owning a contender and paying the price of a new handi for a barrel, I did some thinking.

Economics is a key factor Prive of a 2 handis vs the cost of a contender.

Durabality- If something bad should happen say I drop my handi or ding it up, really no big deal. It's a shooter, meant for carrying, hunting and just about anything else you could REASONABLY do with a gun and not worry about.

Customizing- anything you can imaginge you can do very cheaply to you handi

Accuarcy- suprisingly they are some shooters. They will often produce sub moa groups.

Ease of operation- push the thumb lever down it comes open easily, no squeezing needed.

It's great we have alot of choices, enjoy your contender but don't be afraid to spend some bucks and try a handi. You will be pleastanly suprised.

H&R has made lots of combos, that combo is a recent offering from select regional markets, Buds has had them in stock for quite a while, also 270 and couple others, they still offer the 12ga/44mag and 20ga/357mag, and have made combos with as many as 3 barrels including rimfires.

As for swapping barrels, that's a personal preference, lots of members have many barrels for one frame, many have ordered multiple accessory barrels to be fitted on one order, IIRC one member had 23 barrels fitted on one order.

The last 3 digits of the frame S/N will be engraved on each barrel lug, if factory fitted.  That combo on gunbroker says new in the box so I'd suspect factory fitted for both the '06 and the 20 ga barrels.  Good question for the seller.

Man Tim, I can't imagine how long the guy waited for 23 barrels, unless he just bought what was in stock.  If we each ordered 23 barrels of our choice today, we'd both probably be dead before we got them.

well bout 25-30 mile outside radius around me, there are plenty of t/c owners, mainly they have bought second hand from people around me. here at my home test range we like to compare one hole shooters accuracy.
before and after tweek'n....my son is a marine corp armorer and he can make these handi's sing a song.....
so simple and well pleasing results. he has done several t/c's too, but the cost is much greater because of
time and parts involved.  i do the handload part of the developing cus i've got too old to run these new

as previous posted, handloading plays a big part is handi accuracy, and for others too.
ya just gotta know what to do when your kinda problem happens.

If anyone has  "Accurizing the Factory Rifle" by Mic McPherson, read the 8-page chapter on the Handi, here's what he says in the intro.

Tim

This interesting single-shot rifle offers surprising
accuracy in a very modest package. This
rifle's accuracy potential belies its very affordable
price. Further, the tinker need only do a few
special things to bring the best out of one of
these rifles.

This system is certainly adequate, as evidenced
by the astounding accuracy produced by
typical examples of these rifles.

The New England Firearms
Handi-Rifle (and the equivalent H&R Ultra) are a
marvel of modern engineering. Price is in the bargain
basement; performance is in the clouds.
These rifles function and shoot better than most
hardened riflemen will believe. One acquaintance
tells of a tough old Texas rancher, a multi-millionaire,
who chose this rifle as his Alasku and Canada
hunting companion on world-class safaris. If that
were not surprising enough, he fitted his .30-06
Springfield chambered Handli-Rifle (about a $200
gun) with a top-of-the-line Schmidt & Bender
hunting riflescope. (For those who do not know,
Schmidt & Bender is to riflescopes what Rolls-
Royce is to automobiles.)
