picked out my next shotgun
« on: January 11, 2011, 09:33:30 AM »
Well I've been wanting a respectiveble shotgun for a while and a workhorse. Kicked around the idea of a beretta 3901 . Supernova. 870 16 Ga. And Bps 10. I have a budget of 133$ a month for my$ shotgun. Well I went to the dealer today and the store I go to is like a smaller basspro. I talked to the same person I alway do. Well I held the beretta felt nice looked at sa08 wby and Bps 12 Ga. Asked him to price a Bps 10 stalker. He told me 640$ 700$ otd.  I also said I need monthly payment under 120$. So he said 350$ down. I told him... ill be back...... at the end of february.  My brother owes me some money plus I might sale my other shotgun. I feel good buying my own shotgun with my own money I work hard for. I should have about 400$ by the end of february.  I hope alls go well buying my first gun since I just turned 18 , 11 days ago.

You will love the BPS. The only advice I would add is unless as stated you intend alot of goose hunting and turkey hunting, get the 3.5" 12ga instead of the 10ga. Only say this as then you would be able to shoot skeet and any game you wish with the 12ga having a broader range of shells. Now if ya do alot of goose hunting  then by all means get the 10ga. I had the 10ga BPS and ended up selling it and picking up another 12 just because I used it a couple times a year for turkeys and that was it.

The 3.5 12 Ga has alot more recoil sometimes 30-40 lbs more of recoil. Plus im a adobe 10 Ga user. I had a 3.5 12 it was ok but I can get more performance from a 10 when I buy custom ammunition. Like 1600 fps from 1 1/2 oz of steel.or 1800 fps for 1 5/8 or 3/8. I found a number of small company's who make true 10 Ga power loads for it not the water down factory stuff to promote 12 Ga sales. Plus with bb shot and large it makes better patterns. And I can use my h&r chokes in the Bps 10.

Plus 12 Ga 3.5 ammo is overpriced for what it is. I mean its real popular bust still expensive what the hell and the hulls cost just as much as 10,8 Ga hull. Its like when I was talking to my dealer he said that. He thinks the 12 Ga 3.5 like the ultramags and other magnum stuff is just a trend. Not not saying I wouldn't buy a sbe2 if I had the money lol then again the sp10 is 300$ more lol.  I did like the beretta 3901 totems was fatter than should be unlike the sa08 but the beretta was smooth like hot butter

The BPS is great ut the cost and availibility of the 10 ga shells will eat you out of house and home.
I have a 10 ga but bought a plain Benelli Nova a few years ago for the salt flats duck and goose hunting in Southern CA near the salton sea.
The first trip I made there the mud stuck to my S&W 3000 and parts were rusting before I left the blind for the day.
After that I wanted a knock around shotgun and the Nova got the nod.  So far it has been to the salton sea many times for ducks and geese and has come back fine, a little rust in the allen screws for the slide but nothing like what was forming on the 3000. (sentimental reasons why I do not just spray paint the 3000.)  But other than that.  I get to use the Nova at trap, skeet, sporting clays, and other shotgun events like dove and quail.
While I load 1 1/4 oz loads for my 10 ga.  they are a pain in the toosh to load with all of the felt wads to suck up space to use the Rem SP10 wad.
And the 2 Oz loads are too much for most upland birds.   Even buying the 2 7/8" shells loaded from RST are almost $2 a shell.
When I first got my 10 ga and was loading the 2 Oz Loads a couple buddies had just gotten benelli Super Black Eagles and all three of us were screwing around at the club shooting for 30 yards with the 3.5" shells and 2 oz or more and after the 13th round my fingers on my right hand went numb from the recoil.
if you are going to have a single knock around  BB gun for water fowl and turkey gun I would get a 12 ga.  just more options in shells.

their same price as 12 Ga 3.5 shells. I dnt shoot 2 3/4 or 3" shells any how. And i never usually buy what other people do.  I can actually get practical applications out of the 10 Ga. I also want to get a 16 Ga one day and 28 Ga. I also buyvall my munitions online  :-[

17ms, you do not have to sell me on the 10ga. I had one and enjoyed hunting with it. Just did not get to hunt with it very often. All I was offering was for you to buy a first with YOUR money was something that could be used from skeet to the big heavy stuff. Like Mcwoodduck said a do all. But if ya want a 10ga it is a great gun for the big stuff.

OK
good luck. the BPS is a great gun.  one of the stalkers is on my wish list for a goose gun.
OH BTW I had the idea I would buy the inserts to change 10 ga to 12 ga and get some practice in on the trap and skeet range before goose and duck season.  Full choke is full choke.  Full choke with a 12 shell is not a skeet choke.
The ga inserts for the 10 ga have a split in them and ruin the hull you are shooting and take a little while to reload.  It is possible to do it just bring a pencil or section of cleaning rod with you to pop the hull out of the insert.
post some pics when you get it in you hands.
I oredered some of the 2 7/8" loaded #5 shot from RST for mine for Upland birds.  At one point my friend and I were going to go to Montana for water fowel and hunt pheasants, and grouse as well.  Figured the short shells would be great and so far the box I have shot at the range  in a rabbit shoot work like a champ.
and 2 Oz of 7.5 will reach way up ther and pluck a dove on O2 out of the desert sky.

Im not trying to sell it just saying I don't care for things that are to popular lol if that makes sense. You could just steel shot instead of those Rst loads. I think anything under 28$ box is cheap. I dnt plan on shooting 500 rds a month.  Hell if I had the money id get a vinci. That's a sweet looking shotgun... I do want to get tha Bps 10 though and have it sipped in acu snow

i remember  my first  gun  when i was  18.....marlin 336 in 35 remington

not  to be rude....
but if you have to make payments....you  need a mossberg

ok   spring for   the 3.5  length...if you think you need  it  and
enjoy a lot of practice with this gun  with promotional / cheap  2.75  inch  walmart ammo
i  just  never even shoot the  3 inch  shells  after the fist year  of moving  up to the 3 inch chamber
my 3.5  chambered gun........only been out of the house twice

i would say with the cost of  10 gage  ammo  its out

i bet a mossberg  would outlast  any of the other choices

it just doesn't give as much pride of ownership  as some of the other choices

;D   MC, if you don't mind..how many felt wads do you use for spacers in you 10 ga. ammo that you reload....I bought a bunch, but they never worked too well..tried some fiber wads, they were much better..but I would like to find a use for these felt wads...I usually load 1 5/8 oz. of lead for varmits etc..with Blue Dot I believe..would have to check..

Sounds good.
Post pictures.
I just hit my black guns with electrical tape for camo - Tan for weeds and white for snow.  Couple strips here and there and it comes off.

I have to go look at the recipe.
I use a Remington hull.
Sp10 wad and green dot.
i added a 12 ga over the shot card to the mix over the shot to help make the crip look good.
The 20 ga felt wad goes in the shot cup and the shot goes on top.
I loaded all the hulls before I moved two years ago and have not shot them.
Hit me back with this post and I will send recipe from the loading book.

The BPS is the best shotgun for serious hunters currently made.

That being said, the 10 is not even remotely versatile.  I have one and use it a fair amount.  It was my turkey gun for awhile but it is simply too heavy.  I've duck hunted with it but it is, again, too heavy.  Shells are expensive, hard to find, and easy to short shuck.  The 10 (in 26 or 28 inch) is a fantastic goose gun, and a passable option for turkeys.  It's not a good idea for anything else.  If you don't own a 12 you should go there instead.  But not 3 1/2".  Get a 3" 12ga BPS in 28" if you're taller than say, 5' 10" and a 26" if you're somewhat short.  That would give you the ultimate waterfowl gun, a very good pheasant gun, a good turkey gun, and a decent small game gun.  The 3 1/2" is for guys who don't know how to shoot with the exception of turkey hunters.  For wingshots the 3 1/2" 12 is too slow, too expensive, and has too much recoil.  You don't want the extra pump stroke.

In short, if you're going to own 1 shotgun it should be a 3" BPS 12ga in either 26 or 28".  Once you have that gun covered you can think about a 10, particularly if you are planning on killing a bunch of geese.

I already have a maverick 88 which I like but poi is off by a long shot but I did hunt with it alot before I had the h&r.  It collects dust now.  If I wasn't so found of the 10 Ga id get the beretta 3901 they had it for 599$ now like I said that is a smooth gun. I like the 10 Ga like elmer keith did the 44 mag lol.  Also around here that mossberg 835 is not a popular gun and it doesn't sell easy and almost no one carryings mossberg dealt.  Except walmart and not many people go there anymore. I love the action on the Bps I have held a wood stocked Bps 10 30" barrel about 2 yrs ago for a 11 lb gun it felft like my 7 lb maverick it was well balanced .. plus I have this this sling dnt know what brand but it has a half inch of gush on it it makes them heavy guns carry like a light one. But I hardly use a sling like when I take my 10 Ga squirrel/crow hunting I just carry itcon my shoulder.

Im 5'9" with my boots on 140-150 lbs. I say only people who chicken wing there elbows like 90% of people do have a problem with recoil. I tuck my elbow into my bottom rib and you can't tell you even shot really. Also to me smaller gauges kick harder 20 Ga Spartan hurts not a chimes gun. I dnt know I just like heavy guns. I told my dad it is not that im a recoil junky or trying to be manly its just I don't complian about stuff like recoil and weight etc. He said if he he was paying that much for a gun he damn sure would. Plus I've been looking ag the Bps 10 for 3 yrs now I can afford it.

The recoil of a BPS 10 is not a big deal.  The gun is heavy so it feels more like a push.  Good decision to steer clear of the Mossbergs.  You get what you pay for there.

Once they start makeing the 6" .410 folks will say buy that insted of a 12ga. Only man of the 1990 on could dream of screwing up a guage system that was prefect for a hundred years. Got to love those 50 foot shotstrings of some of our modern shells. Of course now days the 12 is realy bored as a 11ga but thats another story
