Is the 458 Lott a necked up 416 Remington Mag?
« on: January 11, 2011, 12:13:45 PM »
I just found a few pieces of brass that are stamped 416 Remington Mag.  They are necked up to 458.  Is the 458 Lott a necked up 416 Remington Mag? Can these be necked back down to the 416 and used as they were originally made as a 416 Rem?  Most cases run 2.82-2.84 inches.

Thanks for the replys.

It's probably more proper to think of both the 416 Remington Magnum and the 458 Lott as necked up 375 H&H Magnum cartridges.

You should be able to neck your cases back down to 416 Remington Magnum diameter.  They may be a little longer or shorter then SAMI specs but probably not enough to be a significant problem.  In necking down, annealing might help to prevent split necks from excessive brass working.

*8.mm REM mag is necked up to .416 , reformed to 416 REM MAG.

From your dimensions of the cases, it seems that they were blowm out to be used in a 458 Lott. And as Grumulkin said both are derivatives of the 375 H&H case.  You can form the case down to 416 Rem, but you may need some Case Formming Dies to form the case down from .458 to .416.

Yes, and the 8mm Rem Mag is a necked down 375 H&H Mag.
