.35 Whelen in the field
« on: January 11, 2011, 12:54:41 PM »
Finally, i have bloodied my .35 Whelen Handi.  This buck slipped in behind my stand in the fading twilight and I stopped him broadside at 60 yards. I placed the bullet behind his front shoulder and 200 grain Hornady exited his left front should and was not recovered.  I was completely blown away with the power of the Whelen.  Even though it was a lung shot, the buck dropped in his tracks and expired within seconds.  This truly is an amazing cartridge!

congrats on the nice buck. The whelen is the next rifle on my list. The few people I know that have whelens have all had similar responses on their first kills with them....bang...dead. Can't wait to get my hands on one.  ;D

Congratulations on a great hunt, a nice deer and a superb rifle.  I've thought long and hard about a Whelen, but I've got this fixation with the straight walled cartridges.  I think my next two will be the Handi in .444 and the .500,  Several of my my bottlenecks such as the .30-06 and 7mm-08 haven't even been out for meat yet. I was hopeing to use the '06 for bear this year, but it didn't work out.  I thought my grandkid would use the 7mm for deer, but that didn't work out either.  He missed his Hunter Safety Course.

I have the same affinity for straight walled cartridges too!  I have a .500 S&W craving, but I just rummaged around at on old gun shop and came out with an of old, dusty box of Barnes .35 cal 275 grainers for $10.00  ;D!  If the barrel will stabilize them I may not need a .500 mag. I'll have a thumper of my own!
