Anyone make there own leather goodies
« on: December 16, 2003, 10:17:45 AM »
Now I am not trying to take business away from our pard Big Ed....

But I was bored on the weekends that there were no shoots to go to.  So I got out the leather working kit I got 15 years ago, and started fooling around with the stuff again...

So far I have made 2 sets of roping cuffs and a shot shell belt slide that will snap over my gunbelt.

I have a pattern for spur straps as well.

What have you folks made and had good luck with....?

I am thinking of making a set of leather suspenders next.

Sure is sorta relaxing for me....

I have made a couple of holsters, and some items for fur trade era friends of mine.  I also experimented with a fringed belt bag that contained 6 loops for .44/40.   As another experiment, I made a fringed gun cover my my 1860 Army when it has the attached shoulder stock, it was made from scraps, so it was nice and cheap.  Over Christmas break, I am hoping to begin a fringed rifle cover for my Henry.

Right now Big Ed is the guy.  Maybe someday when I get some free time (joke!) I'll look into it but I'm getting to work at 6:30 (school opens at 8:15) just to try to stay where I am, let alone catch up.  Ho, Ho, Ho....

I have made several items at this point, many years ago I made a holster for a 45 auto that didn't fair to well, so I presumed that I was leather work challenged, Well 20 years later a Tandy leather store re-opens in town and I try my hand at it again and it appears that I am not leather work challenged I am just not a leather carver, I am a stamper, to get my feet wet I made some spur straps turned out pretty well, then I made a gun belt for myself and learned a few lessons, that one did not turn out as well as I would have liked, So I tried again and the belt turned out really nicely
Of course I was making this one for my brother in law, I posted some pics of it on the net, so I made a nice holster to go with it, My dad was a carver and very good at making just about anything you would care to mention, when he passed away the leather working stuff found its way to two unappreciative grand kids, where it just sat and got dusty, I retreived my dad's stuff and got started on a new hobby! I will continue to practice my carving but in making several projects I have honed many skills such as cutting out the blanks for many projects. some thing that still eludes me a bit is cartridge loops, the leather that comes with the gunbelt kit is pretty thick and does not form around the shells too well I made a holster and belt for a buddies son for Christmas and it is for a Ruger single six so he needs 22 cal loops obviously the thicker material is not going to work so I bought a calf skin and made the loops from that and they turned out really nice, I may offer my Brother in law a replacement belt with the new design loops! Big Ed has made me a Quigley belt and it is very very well done of course he has a few years experience on me! I made mistakes when I ordered it and Big Ed made it again with the corrections he didn't have to do that! he stands behind his work even if it ain't his fault!

5 Oz is a little thick for CTG loops, it doesn't like to wrap around the shells too good. I used 2-3 Oz Calf and it worked great.

"Can't Find Hidecradters.com" in AOL (Google) search.  Are you sure that's the address?

Have made some excelent holsters and molded the leather to the gun. I placed the gun in a zip-loc bag and soaked the holster. I then placed the bagged gun in the holster and shaped it to the cylinder and trigger guard, set it aside to dry and then used finishing liquid. This is something like floor wax but it shines real nice. They were all thumb breaks and worked perfectly. Tandy Leather IS the place to shop in my opinion.
