Savage 24 info needed
« on: January 11, 2011, 04:51:27 PM »
I've been looking at some Savage model 24 combo guns chambered 22lr/20ga for small game hunting. I have seen some with the barrel selector button on the side of the receiver. I have also seen them with the barrel selctor made into the hammer.
If you have one or both of these styles please tell me how you like them and if you think one is a better design than the other.

Thanks!

My dad had the 22lr/20ga when I was a kid and I used to shoot it quite a bit.  The model he had was the one with the selector on the hammer.  I liked it alright.  Made switching to the other barrel easy even for a kid.

Thanks Navylawdog, sounds like the gun your dad had was a good reliable shooter.
I'd really like to get one of these guns in 22lr/20ga for my small game hunting.

Thanks again!

GOOD SHOOTING!

Had a 22/410 combo some years ago, selector on the receiver. Never had any problem .  Never tried the other so I
   can`t comment.

be careful. The earlier guns ar of a better quality. That is thos that have barrel actually soldered together whether the entire length or just on two points. The "p" series guns are held together by a band and are pure garbage as the band will actually rotate an bend barrels when fired. The newest ones 24f series are ridiclously heavy 8 1/2lbs. It is possible to mount optics on these but you will need a heavy duty air rifle mount. BKL (Ithink thats the right name) makes one which will work. has 5 or so clamping screws for a dovetailed reciever.

I have two 24's.     older  223/20    and a newer  223/12.  Love them both.
The 223/12   is my turkey / coyote gun.  Very accurate using white box win.
45 gr. ammo.

i had 2 of these and wish i still had them  :( one was 22mag over 20ga. the other was 222 ove 20ga. this one was the kind with the barrel band and i had to have one made cause the factory one was junk but after i had a band made it was a tack driver. they both had the selector on the hammer fine guns. i really miss the 22mag it was the soldered kind with the game scene on the receiver and was grooved for a scope. it shot great. ive looked at replacing the 22mag version over the years but they have jumped up in price last one i saw was 475.00 good luck hope you find a nice one

I have a 22lr/410 with the selector on the hammer. Fun gun.

I don't know why, but there are guys who convert the receiver-mounted selector to the hammer one.

Might want to take a peek over here...

Since the early 70's, as far as I recall anyway, Savages' solution when the receiver mounted selector failed was to replace the hammer with the newer style that had the selector in the hammer. I seem to recall replacing quite a few. The button and internals were removed, leaving a slot in the receiver. I don't believe Savage had parts available for the earlier selector and phased it out after the upgrade. I prefer the later hammer mounted selector, partly because my first gun, a 22Mag/20ga had a hammer mounted selector, partly because I believe it was alot more reliable. Not sure when they changed - my gun was built in about 1968. If the time comes that I had to make a selector instead of being able to buy one, that's sure the one I'd want...

The price is now $475? ???  :o. Scary, but I remember something my grand father told me years ago.  The only things that never go down in price are guns and land.
Back to the subject, I have a 24C in .22 & 20 gauge with the selector on the hammer.  I personally think this is a more fool proof (K.I.S.S.) system.  But what do I know, I never even knew they changed to a selector on the receiver.  :P  :-[

EAA/USSG has started importing the MP94 .22/410 combo again, although I've yet to see it in stock.  I'd really like one also and at $340 List, final price will probably be about $280 to $300 at most retailers.  Might keep your eyes open for one.  8)

One quick note is that Davidson's has the picture of the 12ga/.223 version on that model.  In the .22/410, the .22 barrel is on top:
