SB1 Rifles
« on: January 12, 2011, 04:43:43 AM »
The .44 mag shows 36,000 psi and the .357 mag at 35,000 psi. The pressure for a .45-70 much lower at only 28,000 psi (trapdoor loads), so wouldn't shooting a .45-70 at trapdoor levels be actually safer than the .44mag and .357 mag? Wouldn't it make sense for H&R to fit .45-70 accessory barrels on SB1 frames?  Am I missing something here?

Probably what you are missing would be the possible maximum cup pressures. AT 25k it would be safe on sb1 but what happens when somebody gets freeky and loads some real barn burners. Liability issues at work....

also, 45-70 has a bigger case head therefore more breech thrust than the 357 or 44.  However, I believe back in the day, 1970s, H&R shipped 45-70 barrels on cast iron frames, the Sharaki comes to mind.  Probably be a very bad idea to shoot a Ruger #1 45-70 load in a cast iron frame Handi.

They may very well do so someday, although I doubt it, the only reason the 357 and 44 mag SB1s were created was to take advantage of the Indiana pistol caliber rifle deer hunting market, there's no incentive for them to do the same with the 45-70 and 22 Hornet which both would work fine on an SB1 frame.
