Savage Model 10
« on: January 12, 2011, 10:22:05 AM »
Savage is putting out a model 10 complete with scope, accutriger and synthetic stock. I have seen it in .243 and .308 . Some of the retailers are selling it an attractive price.   Does anyone have this package ? Good gun or not so good gun ?

The model 10 package at WalMart is a great deal.  Sweet shooting rifle with the accutrigger.  The plastic stock is much better than the one that comes on the 12FV.  The scope is a Bushnell 3-9 and I was actually quite surprised with it.  You can get the same package from other sources as the model 11 package but you'll pay about $150 more for it.  If you want a caliber different than .243, .308, .270 or .30-06 you'll have to go with the more expensive 11FXP package.

I bought one last week in .308.  I promptly tore it down.  The scope went on my .17HMR temporarily and as I said was pretty surprising for what I was considering a "throw-away."  The barrel went on my old model 111 that was originally in .243.  It came with irons and when I took them off it left holes in the barrel and some wear marks where the front sight base was.  The action is getting a Shilen 1:8" .243 varmint weight barrel.  I'm waiting on the B&C Medalist stock for that build.  I am probably going to get another package gun in .243 to build a .308 tactical rifle on and give me a .243 barrel for my sporter.  Why not leave the package gun the way it is?  They are only available in right hand for the cheap version and I am left handed.  I like a left handed rifle for hunting but a right handed setup for use from the bench or a bi-pod.

To follow up...

Took the "new" rifle (package gun .308 barrel on my older LH action) out to give her an ops check.  Fired a 10 shot group at 100yds once I had it zeroed.  All 10 within an inch shooting from a simple rest and fired relatively quickly.  I can certainly live with that.

Would you guys mind sharing what you're paying for this Model 10 package at Walmart or wherever else you're picking them up?

Savage's website lists a Model 10 GXP3 for an SRP of $712, but I suspect you're talkign about a different package and a lower price?

The package at WalMart is a 10FXP.  It is made for WalMart and the closest equivalent is the 11FXP on the Savage site.  It is only available in .243 and .308.  They also have a 110FXP that is available in .270 and .30-06.  Here either model goes for $397.
